just the w58 and r154. why? whats better than a r154 other than a v160 which would be very costly.

im wondering this myself. just cause im trying to find away to adapt the 7m onto my r151 trans in my truck. Yes another supra truck build eventually. supposedly the r151 4x4 v6 trans will work well with a 7m but you need to weld the bell housings together to adapt or find a bell housing that goes from the 7m to a r151. and the 4 cyl 4x4, w56 trans will bolt up to the 7m with a w58 bellhousing

quick noob question here: what all is needed for an r 154 transmission to bolt up to a 7m-ge? I have heard that hammering for more space is needed but other than that I'm not quite sure.

r154 flywheel and clutch.

A yes sir. Now the only thing you would have to change if your going from an auto to a manual (transmission wise) is the wing brackets. And all the obvious

It will bolt right up without mods....

Thanks, I had a feeling the answer would be pretty obvious "/

Nope its from standard to standard so there shouldn't be any other problems.

you have to change the front half of your driveshaft too, since it's a different length...

good time to go with a 1 piece aluminum driveshaft...

also any particular reason? I'm running a w58 on my 7MGTE swap and it's holding up great...

The R151F and the R150F are very similair, but not the same. The R151F came in the turbo 4cyl trucks (which I presume your truck is/was), which were only made for a short time; the kicker is that they have a gear driven transfer case [which is hella beefy] and a 23 spline output shaft (stronger than the 21 spline of the R150F. THe gear ratios, as you know, are different and make the R151F much more desirable for crawling.

I suppose to use an R151F for a 7M swap would be difficult because of the input shaft length... you'd have to take a BIG notch out of the bellhousing or swap the input shaft. I don't know if the input shaft swaps between the R151 and R154... but here's a nice guide on someone else doing the exact same thing you are: http://www.supracharged.com/4runner/7mswap.shtml

I hope that helps.

In terms of what you could bolt to the 7M->R series bellhousing on the transmission side, here's a list: The Jeep/Dodge AX15 5-speed, the Jeep NV3550 5-speed, the Jeep NV1500, the Toyota R150F, R151F & R155F, the 87-92 Toyota Supra Turbo R154, the Isuzu AR5 and the Pontiac Solstice\Saturn Sky\Chevy Colorado\ GMC Canyon MA5. The input shafts may differ in length, so be wary and do your research.

The pre 1995 R150F/R151F input shaft is 6.5". The +1996 R transmissions are all 7.5". The R154 is 7.25". I do believe you can swap the input shaft from an R154 into an R151F, but in my opinion, it'd be much easier to get longer bolts and a 0.25" spacer made for the bellhousing, so the trans and engine sit further apart. Seeing as that the R151F is very desirable, you could probably sell yours and the t-case for serious cash and pick up an R150F and a chain driven case for alot less... depending on what you want.

-------------

And as a side note, putting a V160 or V161 into a MkIII is a rediculous proposition. The gear ratios are all wrong for the stock rear end ratios available, so you'd have to keep the MkIV rear subframe with the transmission. It's also enormous, so the tunnel will have to be beaten like a red-headed step child. THEN, the ratios essentially place another gear between 2nd and 3rd on the R154... so really, just another shift to get to the same final gear. Wait, no... actually, the V161 is significally higher geared in overdrive than the R154, so a straight trans swap would dramatically slice your top speed. WOOO! What a great idea :3d_frown:

A V160 with a MkIV rear end would be pimp... but without a 3.20 ring and pinion out back, it'll suck gigantic donkey balls for a $7000+ bill. A T56 is a significantly better choice for a 6 speed: it's basically an R154 with an extra gear on the end (double overdrive).

Well the clutch went out on my 88 N/A 5spd and I would like to get a little something stronger since hopefully in the future I would like to go turbo.

w58 to r154 you need drive shift, clutch, and flywheel. if your looking for a mild turbo build and are not going to heavily abuse your drive train then the w58 fine. if you like to abuse your car tho get a stronger tranny.
