transmission swap or rebuild?

right now my car has 152,890 miles on it. i rebuilt the engine bak wen it had 150,000 on it. the transmission needs either rebuilt or replaced. i want to keep the original transmission though so i choosing to rebuild. im wondering, do i need to take the engine out 'again' in order to get the trans out? or not. if not how would i go about removal? also im not sure if i NEED to fix the tranny. told others the symptoms of my car and some (non supra owners) think that it could be a vacuum leak causing the problem :aigo: . as of now the car lurches backward when i shift it into reverse from a cold start, and if i accelerate hard in normal mode the car..... isnt fun to drive any more hahah. pls tell me wat u think and how i can get the transmission out.

You can get the tranny out without pulling the engine, is it easy? no but you can do it. What transmission is it? I have a goof R154 for 650 and ill take it to you.

We need more specifics about the problem than "it isn't fun to drive anymore". I have the same automatic tranny in my 87 NA and I had it rebuilt before I put a new engine in. The previous owner (mechanic) said the tranny was slipping some, but the engine had a blown headgasket so I was planning on getting a new engine anyway. I took both the engine and tranny out still bolted together. When I put the new engine back in I put them in separately; the engine first, then the tranny. So, I do know it's a pain in the ass to put back in. It required two pretty strong guys and a jack, as well as some trial and error. There's 2 or 3 bolts that are just really difficult to get to, but once you've done it a few times it gets easier (the starter has to come out too).

If I were you, I would reply to this thread with more details of what problems you're having with the car. I definitely would not be in a hurry to take the tranny out.

You have a Hanes manual for the car? It has a troubleshooting guide for various performance problems.
