So today i was driving my car and all was fine untill i parked it and came back to drive it a while later. As soon as i shifted into 3rd gear i heard a whinning noise. To me it sounds very much like its coming from the tranny. It still drives like normal in 3rd gear, just makes a wierd noise. All other gears i dont hear the noise, so they seem fine. However, i just got back and parked the car and while it was running and in nuetral i could hear a very faint whinning noise coming up from the shifter area. When i push the clutch in the noise completly goes away. Any ideas whats going on with my transmission? Also the car is a 5 speed.

stupid question but how do you check the fluid for the tranny? never had to do it.. Also i might add that previous to this happening i did happen to grind 3rd gear pretty bad.. but the noise didn't happen immediatly after that happened. it didn't start doing it till i drove the car again.

to check the fluid you'll need to drain some out theres no dip stick for the 5speeds. at that point might as well drain and refill. use some redline mt90 it might go away but most likely the wine is from grinding 3rd. tranny fluid should be changed every 30k same with the diff.

ok. so if grinding the gear caused the noise then why would changing the fluid do anything for it? sorry if some of these question are stupid, never had tranny problems so i'v never really learned much about them..lol

Fluid check was suggested prior to you mentioning that you were grinding 3rd gear. However, many have reported that switching to Redline MT90 helps to reduce (sometimes eliminate) whining. This is an easy and relatively cheap avenue to explore.

Other than that you would have to get someone to look inside the tranny or find another one.
