transmission fluid recommendation

i remember reading about it somewhere on here but i searched for awhile and i coudlnt find the thread.... my tranny always had problems shifting 1st into 2nd and all the other gears were a little tough when the tranny was cold. once it got warm it was fine. I pretty sure i saw a thread where someone reccomended a trans fluid that helps this problem.... any direction would be greatly appreciated.

i actually used the 75w-80 or 90 NS (non slip) its made for transmission, where as the other regular transmission stuff thats 75w-90 is actually made for LSD's.

i had mt-90 but i was VERY unimpressed by it.

Really?...that's an interesting comment. Red Line MT-90 is a superior product IMO for the R154 or W58 trannys...it's formulation is better vs Red Line 75W-90NS in a transmission application. Everyone using MT-90 I know of reports smoother shifts and less tranny noise.

I'd like to hear why you are "VERY unimpressed".

I changed the seals in mine last motor pull and have been running Lucas. Shifts as nice as a heavy duty tranny should. Syncro's are great in these trannys.

I'm running Royal purple in the rearend without any additives. Posi locks very nicely but I do get a little chatter now and then coming outa the hole.

If I had problems shifting I would start planning on pulling the tranny for an overhaul.

I use Red Line in my LSD, and it works quite well.
I have an auto trans, so what I use in it is irrelevant.

But I have had problems in older manual trans with Red Line.
It is so slippery, that the syncros were not able to properly pull the gears into matching speed,
and the car shifted horribly.
Went back to regular gear oil, and after a week the trans was shifting good again.

It was a very high mileage trans, and should have been rebuilt.
But the fact is, some high mileage trans will shift better without Red Line in them.

The same applies to a high mileage LSD...Red Line can induce "clatter". That's why I'll tell guys to give the Ford 75W-90 a try...you can use it in the tranny too, just don't use the friction modifier. In either case you are running on borrowed time. Using a conventional gear oil may make a difference for a while, but the problem is going to reappear...of course, at the worst possible time. If your tranny or LSD is that worn, you just have to break down and rebuild

Let me clarify that I'm running Lucas Heavy Duty 80/90 in the tranny. No additive etc although the little gimmick with the two hand cranks at the store is pretty convincing.
Going to reconsider this after that page link !

I would never use one of their additives ESPECIALLY in the engine. Heard and seen horror stories with gum. Just like Quaker State 10-40 in the 70's.

Red Line MT-90 here...

I've been through a lot, normal gear oil, Royal Purple Max Gear, Royal Purple Syncromesh, and now the MT-90.

I DO NOT recommend the Royal Purple in any way, shape or form as it grinds WORSE because the friction modifiers in it (too slick).

with the mt-90 it was nicer, but when i switched from the mt-90 to the 75-90ns, i was able to get into gears a lot smoother, especially reverse. I just like the 75-90ns more i guess... i was going to run mt-90 in the R154 first, and then if i dont like it, i was going to switch to the 75-90ns again and see if its makes a difference...

odd...

the MT-90 didn't work overnight mind you, it took some time before the syncros started working really well again.

Reverse doesn't have a syncro, and these trannies have issues with reverse...even stock if you read the owner's manual...

so if my fluid hasnt been changed in a while, idk when cus ive only had the car since maybe december, but either way im changing it soon and i need to just get a strait answer to which one i should use, i really need to know cus im prolly guna just get toyota to do it,

IMO, Just do it yourself, and use MT-90. It's really easy, just use PBlaster and make sure you try and loosen the fill plug before you touch the drain plug! And get new gaskets (plastic washers) for the drain & fill plugs as well

Well, after hearing what everyone has to say about MT-90 (the salesman said, that Red Line is an oil above any competition), I just ordered some also for my rebuilt tranny...Let's hope that it'll be good.
You Americans consider yourself lucky...I had to pay 3x the price you have to pay:cry:
