Tranny grinding only in 1st,2nd 3rd and 5th HELP!

Here is why Figgie is probably right, and jdub. The rings are the only grinding you hear. The gears are in mesh at all times, that is why it is called a syncronized transmission. The rings change the speed of the gears on the shaft. There are no gears for 4th, as IJ pointed out. It is direct drive.

The teeth on the outside of the ring gear are the clutching teeth. When they are rounded from grinding, they will not hold you in gear. A fork is possible, but I don't think likely.

Yep...that's what I was thinking. The reason I asked about the oil is gear oils that contain friction modifiers are not good for syncros...RP is one of those oils. Read this:

It would be hard to say that the previous use of RP gear oil caused this problem, but I'm betting it didn't help.
