In my expirience the 7MGE and the 3SGTE are much more unreliable than the 7MGTE but it all depends on personal expirience, the 7M's do have gremlins but if well maintained and not abused they aren't that horrible, if toyota had put a real HG on them and torqued them down like they should have they would be much much better, they also should have used a more effective and less convuluted piping system for the coolant and forced induction, other than that not bad.
