I come from a land down under
When I went and towed Allan's Mk3 back I took a dual axle trailer over on my Ute (around the 1700kg mark) as we were loading it on the Mk3 was heavy enough to lift the rear wheels on the Ute and it tried to make a break for it downhill!

I had visions of it the trailer and Allan's new car disappearing off down the hill into the creek!

A quick dash and jammed my foot onto the brake pedal saved it all ;)!
(be careful out there people)

Dys: It was before before my time as a driver. Not sure on the details as it was something that I read in a towing magazine about flatbed tow trucks. Same thing applies in long distances.

Yikes IJ, Thats nuts...I had a steering wheel lock give out and it sent the nose of the car I was towing into the on coming lane. Could not figure out why all the cars coming at me were pulling onto the shoulder?? DU DU DOOO! Hence the seat belt trick..

Free tip: If you ever tow a car without a front windshield. Roll all the other windows down first... Ask me why... LMAO

I personally dont think a clutchpack lsd would benefit from being driven fast by the wheels, as opposed to being driven by the driveshaft. i have no idea why.. but if you ask me id rather push my supra than tow it if at all possible... this is just because i used to have freinds with DSMs and they couldnt tell me enough about how they cant get there car towed except on a flatbed.. ever since i've always been careful.

i had a nightmare with the aa when my supe broke down in a friends street. they eventually sent a truck that could pick the back end up. But the guy had to have the arm realy low down to avoid the front lip being damaged. it was fun as the van kept bouncin all over with the weight of the supra lol.

Also i once broke down in my dads 4 wheel drive ford sierra. that was fun. there permanent 4wheel drive so i had to wait on a busy motorway for a flatbed truck to come and get me

you said you were a towtruck driver right? i'm guessing you learned some things the hard way... too bad some of those things weren't told to you before happening. :naughty:

but yeah... what exactly happened when you did the window thing? i'm guessing the air pressure blew the rear window....:biglaugh: :3d_frown: lol

I was towing a VW van about 50mph and it blew off the passenger side sliding door and sent it whipping down the road, It was a hulk/junker rig but I was just happy I did not kill anyone. lol

I miss doing off road recoveries/wrecks (except the fatalities) and repos were very fun but a bit scary at times..

It's was on the job training back then for me... :biglaugh:

Follow the instructions in the manual. Towing a car does not cause any extra wear on the differential than just driving around. The only issue arrises when towing an auto-tranny car, like was stated, which can be solved simply by removing the driveshaft.

Are your buddies with DSMs talking about the AWD cars? If so they definitely need to be towed on a flatbed truck. If the rear or front wheels spin and the others cant you can bet your ass it will be an expensive fix. FWD DSMs, like my old one, dont require a flatbed truck.

speaking of towing, on my way home from redding i saw a big 18wheeler that was pulling a load of chips tipped over just past a moderatly sharp curve, a few tire skids, but not much so my guess is he didnt have a chance to slow down. Hope he's ok. :icon_sad:

about 30 min down the road we saw a three axle towtruck going the other way, for obvious reasons.

did you ever do flipovers and stuff like that?

LMAO! no! woodchips...lol. i guess i forgot there are potato trucks out there too...

it was just an open-top chip hauler and it dumped the woodchips all over the side of the road. the kind of trailer with a mesh screen in the back and you can see the substance inside...which sometimes floats out and hits your car :icon_mad:

his side of the cab wasnt crushed and it didn't run INTO anything straight on that i could tell so i think he's probably ok...but i dont know. windshield didnt bust out...cracked though. hopefully he had a seatbelt on.

I didnt want to start a new thread for this so I thought I would share my experiences.

I towed my supra about 500 miles with a tow dolly behind my 89 V6 3.0 Toyota Pickup. The front of the car was on the dolly and I went over several mountain passes ranging from 7000 feet to 4000 feet. Switchbacks were part of it too but the truck pulled it just fine.

If I was caught stopped on a steep slope I just put it in 4 low to get the leverage to move and then popped it into 4h once I got rolling.

The only problem with a car dolly is that you cant back up.
