Mine is a 1991 turbo targa ,and I have never changed the seals....:sarcasm:
And guess what....I don't have any leaks :sarcasm:
It has some flex without the sport roof on.
But when it's on again,then it's 100% like a hard top.
You've got to love the sport roof, even though I don't ride much with the
targa off :biglaugh:

The truth, a targa top on is still not as stiff as a hardtop. Having driven both its just not the same. Close but not the same. And yes the targa is heavier than a hardtop by a few hundred lbs. 200 or so rite? But i cant lie, i love it when the targa is off. If your building a race car, stick to a hardtop. Wanna cruise and show off, get a targa. I have a hardtop now and doing a build, Next car if its going to be a mkiii its going to a be a targa just to chill in.

so what is the car destined to do?

If it has ANY racing that it will be doing. Forgo the targa and go hardtop. Reason is that with a roll cage. The targa becomes a feature that you can not use (ie can not get to bolts). ;)

I take mine off every day for VERY short drives (1 or 2 miles)..

it rattles like a tin can full of change but I wouldn't have it any other way (just need to tighten some bolts, 18 years with the top off makes it a little loose)..

I also told my girl I better not catch her driving her Supra with the top on..:D

she usually takes it off when she gets out of school...

the targa is one of my favorite features of a supra. i would never buy a ht. my current targa doesnt leak, it has all new seals.
Same, I passed over a really nice hardtop for that reason alone. I kill for perfect cruising weather. Replace your old rotted seals correctly and put a good bead of silicone and leaks aren't an issue. I'd only buy a hardtop if I was building a gutted out drag car, but I'd probably look towards an mkii for the instant weight savings.

If you buy a Targa, replace all the seals, take apart targa and rebead all the edges, find a targa brace, enjoy the whole "convertible cruise" without flex or leaks. It takes a bit of work, but for those good cruise days, it makes it quite enjoyable.

if you ever get a chance, pop the hood of both a targa and a hardtop. jack them both up from the front left or right tow hook on the front. Then see which hood you can close ;)

My buddy has broken I think 3 Front Strut Bars on his Hardtop.

I like targa top so much I do not own one. I like my light supra without many creature comforts, and it will have less later on. My weight goal is 3200 lbs with me in it and a 1/2 tank of gas. Make this tank a little lighter, and if I want comfort I will drive in the daily, the supra is for fun.

For performance, no targa. I have a targa and usually don't take it off because of what it does to my hair... because i'm a girl. It's not even that windy tho, just a gust here and there.

vasoline on the old seals keeps em from leaking unless of coarse they are torn. Plus, the wife likes her targa alot more than my old hardtop. Some people say get targa bars, but I made some and I dont think they do that much better. I will make a X bar next time I get my hands on a good welder and see if that makes it better. I also get alot of looks when the tops off too.
