Well im in a bit of a dilemma, i have a 89 JDM hardtop....pretty good condition. and im really thinking about a targa...so thinking that i may aswell ask the people in the plentul lands of mk3 targas themselves
Targas here in NZ are pretty rare, im going to build up the car so i do plan on having a good base
is it worth buying a targa chassis, painting it(gotta do it anyway) and swapping all my hardtop bits over to it

Are they worth the hassle? i mean do you guys want them, use them if you have them. i do understand the hardtops are rather lighter

Thanks for your input!

I live in California and have owned three targas altogether. I bet I've only driven about 100 miles total with the targa off. They are so awesome, but maybe I'm just too lazy to take it off all the time.

I absolutely LOVE my targa. The feeling of it, is just brilliant, and it looks fawkin hawt. The turbo, engine, exhaust, wastegate, BOV, everything I worked on and put effort into, just sounds more alive. I appreciate it so much more.

Targas are so nice IF you ever wanted to use it.

Given the choice, I would go for the targa every time. I use it almost every nice day I get. Yes, it leaks a little, but a complete set of new seals is under $150 (I just ordered mine from Toyota World yesterday), and you can use Dylan's how-to as another way to keep it from leaking.

I just bought a $10 Black & Decker power screwdriver that runs on AA batteries to keep in the glovebox. It cut the time to take on/off in half.

Like RacerXJ said, it looks cool, sounds cool, feels cool. I gotta have it.

I agree with Chriss, I have driven with the targo off only once . Had the car for a year now.

Most of the MKIIIS I have had were hard top and one was with a factory sunroof.( Both were very solid.)
Now I own a targa, and I hate it. ( No guys, I am not gettign rid of it either :) ) lol.
THe car's body feels very weak when the targa is off, especially under sudden acceleration or driving on rough roads.
It looks good when its off though...and if it is a rarity in your town, then I say get it.
Even with the targa on, I occasionally hear squeaks and stuff.

I would suggest finding one of the 90's model with a factory sunroof, which I think makes the car look very nice when its open.

I can understand people not wanting to have it cause of potential leaks.....but if it doesn't, I think its awesome. Its nice to have it off when you are cruising around. And those who bitch about the weight guess what....its the equivelent of losing like 3 hp. woopie. If your car is more than stock, that power to weight ratio loss means even less.

Change the seals and it won't leak, simple isn't it.
I usually have my targa off all summer and whenever it's warm.
People talking about all the extra noise, if it's something other than wind noise you need to fix something or you don't listen to you car enough.
I became real familiar with my car noises having no radio for 3 weeks when I first bought mine.

I dont drive my car unless I can take the top off!!!!!!

If your looking for big power go hardtop..................

Targa's are a pain with rain and wind and seals ect but so way worth it if open air is what your into!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought one of Weezl's targa braces and it makes the ride the same as with the roof on, its way cool to have the sun on ya during hot days. I replaced the seals on mine and it doesn't leak at all. I love the targa option.

i love my targa, i live in california and i hardly have it on anymore, most of the time i just leave it in my garage unless i know i'll be parking the car somewhere. it does feel looser no question about it but there are things you can do to stiffen things up. i guess it depends what's more important to you, stiff chasis for the drag strip or hot chicks that wanna go for a ride in your car ;)
