to repair or to start fresh, that is the question

so here's the deal: i have my 88 1jz / targa / 5spd sitting in the garage. its got a few problems. bent lower control arms in the front, bodywork issues, the leather is toasted, the stereo never worked, the targa is starting to leak, various interior pieces are broken and or breaking. overall its kind of a basket case, but it has a good suspension setup and a good powertrain.

the thing i'm thinking about right now is whether it would be cheaper / better to repair everything wrong with my current 88, or try and find a nice 89+ shell to buy and have my 1jz / suspension moved over to.

discuss!

Just fix one thing at a time, it will be alot less time and money then swapping the drivetrain to a new car.

Mike T. is selling a nice grey interior.
Lower control arms I usually throw away when I take apart a clip, you can have them off of the next one.
Targa seals will probably leak on any car you buy.
A $800 paint job can look suprisingly nice.

oh and where do i find this grey interior? i was looking on the fs section and dont see it anywhere...i am thinking i may buy it right now if the price isnt too bad. the nice thing is i can afford to do that kind of stuff right now since i got a streetbike (250cc ninja, learner's bike) that gets like 60mpg and has cheap insurance ($120 every 6 months, compared to the 670ish i pay for the supra).

alright so i'm just figuring out how i'll pick up mike t's interior.

$800 paint job? if i were to want to change the supra to being black and wanted it to look good enough that you wouldnt notice it used to be a different color, but not like pedantic about the underside of the hood and things you will never see (but still have door edges and things done) am i gonna get away with that low of a price? i know that this place by me called 1 day paint and body will do it for around 1600 (their best paint and all), but i mean is that gonna look like complete shit?

Earl Scheib does the best paint jobs for under $1k. They make their own paint, and it's better quality stuff then Maaco. I'm not sure what 1 Day uses, but I doubt it's any better then Maaco. The thing you will not get a lot of is the prep work, but you can do a lot of that yourself.

well i ended up running into some problems and didnt get mike's interior :( but i have been driving the supra (despite its problems) as my friend layed down my bike last week and its still in the shop.

the sound of a 1jz being rowed through the gears is so amazingly satisfying. not to mention being able to smoke and talk to your girlfriend while driving are two huge advantages the supra has over the bike lol.
