I bought this motor from a guy who bought it from Attarco. It was a rebuilt crate motor. Before he could do the swap, his son wrecked his Supra so he stored it with the intention of finding another shell. That did not happen so here I am with the motor. When the guy stored the motor, he failed to cover it hence the chunks of debris in the cumbustion chambers. I took the head off so I could clean out the debris and noticed that the front cover is higher than the deck. Should I be worried? I plan to eventually go 2JZ so the purpose of this motor is to keep me going until then.

Should I take the block to a machine shop to level out the cover and block? If I do take it to a machine shop, do I need to take out all the internals? Currently, only the block and head are separated.

Please let me know what you guys would do. Thanks!

This is what the cumbustion chambers had in them. :3d_frown:

Here is a straight edge ruler going up to the cover.

Here is the part of the HG that sat where the cover is.

yes you should get it levelled.
and yes when you take it.. you need to strip the block unfortunately.

i would strip everything. get the block machined.. inspect the head. (make sure the timing covers are machined with them.. put everything back together making sure everything is good within spec. and torqued down properly

Thanks for the respose guys. The good deal didn't turn out to be so good I guess. Well at least I got an engine stand and hoist along with a ton of parts with the package.

Poodles: I like the idea of getting just the cover machined. I'll look around before taking it apart. Hopefully, I find a "good" machinist.

Koenigturbo: Yes, the cover is separate from the block/head (haha blockhead). The BIG problem here is that the head also sits on it. If it's not level enough, you will eventually get another BHG. That's why machine shops that think they can "just" rebuild a 7M can really screw somebody up.

I would take it apart and get the whole deal machined. You will regret it later if you dont. Not to mention this gives you the chance to go over the bottom end and make sure it was done right, as well as use a MHG. No point in doing a full rebuild and using a composite gasket. Check the head for warpage too, being bolted down on that timing cover may have distorted it.

The motor is going to be temporary folks, I get the impression he doesn't want to rebuild the already rebuilt motor...

Poodles read my first post! :aigo:

Yes, this motor is intended to tide me over until I can find a 2JZ and build it the way I want to. I am bone stock (besides wheels and coilovers) so the motor should buy me enough time to get the piecies that I need for the 2J swap.

I vote machine down the front cover. If I'm not mistaken the cover can be slightly lower than the deck, but not vise versa, of course.

Well I have decided...

2JZ+V160+MKIV Diff (NO, I won't buy the MKIV, sorry) is the ultimate dream but reality says I just won't "use" it. Well, I will but it's still not realistic considering that what I want is a reliable daily driver that can deliver some fun when I want to. The fun would be about 450 HP waiting for me to use whenever I felt the need to be "spirited". :biglaugh:

So with that said, I will take the motor completely apart and have the head, block, and crank measured. Forged pistons and rods will replace what is currently there. Maybe some titanium valves? I think yes! Definately a MHG.

So I guess this there will be another build thread coming up in the next couple months....

Thanks to all the suggestions everyone!

I'm a semi local "good" machinist that can fix your problem. you just need to bring me the engine with the front cover installed so I can find out how much to remove off the front cover to match the block.

So where's your shop? There's no address on your site...

O.K. well apparently there some thing I don't understand. I guess what I was thinking was, I was thinking there maybe enough slack or play with in the bolt holes in the cover to adjust it lower. I guess this isn't the case other wise you would have done it. I think the reason why this can't be done is because there are alignment dowels that hold it in place. It's been awhile since I've taken my 7m apart. Is this a common problem? I've haven't read or even heard of this before. Learning all the time.

mine was like that but since this motor is temp motor aka mule

i just added a tuch of silcon to the high spot on the block it's not too big on mine so i just slappped it on
also u can use red lock tight as well

worest case i can see if you may oil weeping leak front the front cover wiht a mls

and if you use a stock gasket i whould not worrie to much

mine was not as bad as yours thou and the best way to find out how much you are off flat eadge and set of feeler guages will let yae know how much you are off

if it off by alot then i just flat file it
