Ok so I'm in the process of tuning my built 7m, and when I go WOT in second at about 45 mph it will hook up to about 10-12 psi then the tires just spin. Is this normal for second gear? it's kind of annoying lol I have brand new bridgestone 245s on the back, and it just roasts them if I keep on it.
I'm going to be getting sone bigger ones for next spring/summer, but I woulda thought 245s are plenty. Lol

Mods are:-

89 7m
JE .20 over
Eagle H beams
Fully balanced
Rebuilt head
2.0 mls hg
Shimmed new oil pump
3 in IC
3in turbo back
Precision 6152
Xs power manifold
560cc evo's
4 inch intake
Mac-t blow thru
MBC (for now) at about 12 pounds
6 puck
11lb lightweight fidenza FW
1 pc. Steel DS

I'm just wonering if this is a normal thing for second. Its like I can't even continue racing because my rps drop when I shift in 3rd because I start spinning at about 4.5-5ish k rpm. So I'm not actually goin up to speed for 6.5 k when I shift and it just slows down until I build up speed. Does that make sense? Lol i dont know what I'm making for power yet either, I'm thinking it's gotta be a little up there to cook the tires like this. But maybe it's just me.

Yeah, that's normal. I break loose myself at 8psi. You might want to consider some kind of drag radial... or swap a 1J into your car. OOOoooooh, that's right I said it!!

Yeah, I break loose on any kind of uneven pavement or if I floor it in a turn at only 9 psi. My tires are only 235 though.

I didn't think this close to stock power would be an issue with tire traction, but I've been proved wrong... :(

I wish I had this problem in 2nd @45mph I won't say which motor I have but it's definitely not torquey..... But the topic on hand I know my friend with lightly modded mk3 7mgte can do the same

This really depends on the tires you are running - not so much the size, although that has some effect, but more the tread compound, tread pattern, and exterior temperatures. Running Kumho V.70 race tire, with external temps above about 90F, I can hook any gear with 570 whp. With tires a little harder in the compound - Falken RT615s, for instance, I can hook 3rd.

possibly could use better suspension maybe you have some negitive rear camber.maybe its time for drag radials in the rear normal street tires dont promote traction because they are hard compound rubber polyester made for lots of miles not performace.then again my car is solid axle and i burn the tires in 1st thru 3rd gear but its not so bad that i lose alot of speed.

It doesn't matter what type of tires a person may have... if they can spin in the dry at 100Mph... they have plenty enough power :icon_bigg
nice job IJ! that would actually be enough to scare me!

Had it happen at 2psi in the wet at 100mph and I think some urine came out ;)

OP: Your issue sounds normal. Time for some softer tread.

Just for conversation sake... 275 Riken Raptors here. They have around 5k miles on them and they hold ~420 whp really well. Anything around 50* is a problem till third tho.

Well damn. How do you guys get a good 40 pull goin? Lol I just can't keep up wen I break loose. Ill just have to get some big tires I guess.

And I have 245 all season sports on the rear. So I know they aren't going to be the grippiest, but I was still surprised. Lol

If the tires are warm, ambient temp is ~60*, road completely dry and level, then my sweet spot is 2nd gear 42 mph. I hit redline QUICK and grab third for the third gear flyby! :biglaugh:
