20-30mins yea if u are doing the work in a shop and very damn skilled. I know my car like the back of my handDont feed him pipe dreams. Come now ..... :3d_frown: if he is asking how to take the tranny out ..... more than likely he has never done it before and the 1st time is always the hardest and take longest time thats why he is like ---->>> :1zhelp:

I've pulled the engine + trans before.

I don't see the point removing the engine and the trans to do 'extra maintenance' on the engine when I don't have any 'extra maintenance' to do.

Since I've not removed the trans by itself before, I was just after tips which will save time. Thanks to people who suggested things like loosening the engine mounts so I can tilt the engine - I probably wouldn't have thought of that, and might've broken the mounts ;)

Tom....Just get it up as high as the stands will go so you have room to work....getting it to line up with just a floor jack can be a bitch, usually fighting to get it in has to do with a bad angle. I havent loosened motor mounts, but that sounds good, i do it on a lift, so i put a pole jack under the front end of the oil pan and push it up a little so the rear comes down. I assume you know about spinning the converter to get it all the way in and putting the pilot bolt in first. A long extension with a swivel and 1/2 impact makes the top bell housing bolts easy once rear mount is down.

A cherry picker also helps after loosening the motor mounts, attach it to the front hook and lift the engine a little. it gave me the extra few degrees of tilt needed to drop my old car's r154.

It helps to have 2 people when swapping the trans in car. You'll likely want a spotter and a coulpe jack stands if you don't have a transmission jack that fits under there.

Just for reference, it takes me 45-60 minutes to take a motor out and take off the trans, cam covers, and oil pan. 3 hours later it's back in and running perfect. ;) It's a big pain trying to bench up the trans and line it up in car.

My excuse for always pulling motor and trans together? It's not faster, but it's less stressful and gives you a chance to do maintenance and clean everything you normally can't reach.

The first time I took mine out I dropped it on my hand after wiggling out the shaft.
If your talking about the drive shaft your supposed to take that out first before the tranny.

Not the drive shaft, the little shaft that slides into the flywheel. You gotta wiggle it a little to get the trans out.

5) Find another person or 2 to help wiggle the tranny lose from the engine

Thats why i told him to get another person or 2 to help him at that point.... that big slab of mental not bolted to anything might just end up crushing some tender human flesh and bone

^ nah, you should never have your body, leg, arm, hand, or fingers under something that big being suspended by a chain to begin with, thats just asking for trouble. (I'd post pics of some Xrays I took of what happens when things go bad, but I'm not at home) I took a trans out once by itself, and I ended up jacking the car up off the stands when I went to reinstall it, so when the jack slipped I thought I was dead, it landed back on the jackstands *both of them, as well as a jack under the front subframe* but I swore I would never do that again.

Which brings up another point, having to work around those stupid jackstands. They're always in the way, no matter where you put them.

I'd still like to know if ya'll pull just the engine to change the oil pan or if you go ahead and pull both.

I'd say it's easy taking it out... but when your putting it back in... that's another story especially when your under a car supported by 4 jack stands about 2 ft high and barely enough room for yourself and the tranny. Pulling it out was always easier for me.
