Timings Off

Okay, i paid a guy to set the timing on my car and he did, but its wrong. we had to push the distributor down about 1" and then thread the bolt in and hold it down to get it to idle properly. Is there any easy way to fix this. You can see the bolt thats holding the distributor.

Its very easy check the TSRM there is a step by step how to set your timing its off a tooth take off the oil cap and look into the hole turn the motor clockwise by hand (19mm socket on the crank pulley) till you see the cam lobe pointing straight up then turn it counter clockwise till the crank pulley reads 0 degrees then you can reinsert the CPS with the match marks lined up you may have to remove the turbo coolant line the gear will move as it contacts the cam hope this helps If that does not help your timing belt may be off a tooth.

I think either you guys missed what's being said here or I did....

Emik87t, did you put the bolt in that position? There's no way your ignition timing should be off by enough that moving the CPS that far would fix it. Something else is wrong, as mentioned, you're CPS is probably off by a tooth or two. Did you use a timing gun when you set the CPS there?

You mean on the harmonic balancer right?

Nope... he means crank pulley, the "balancer" is integral.

okay, now the guy that did the timing asked how it should be to set the timing. Is it like a domestic, i mean does the engine have to be in a certain position. The guy was asking and i didnt have the right answer so i told him i didnt know.

Why is that? Since it's clear you're also lost why do you need to be there? Why did you pay an idiot to do something so simple? Something every first year mechanic understands? Something clearly spelled out in the service manual? I'm confused.

You need to take the car to someone who knows what they're doing or at someone who knows how to read. It's obvious you're in for a lot of frustration if you don't.

timing isn't a hard thing to set.





unless you set it 180 off..

As brainless as following the manual is people who don't understand something as simple as the why and how behind valve and ignition timing shouldn't be working on cars. We're talking Auto 101 here, very basic stuff. I understand not everyone knows how but 15 minutes reading any car repair book or looking on the internet and they've learned it for life. Yet endless confusion about doing it appears on this forum. I don't get it.

Well the guy did it because he rebuilt the engine, and he's done quite a few 7ms/2jzs, and he put the head on the block with the mhg so i could just drop it in as one. As far as i know he knows what he's doing, he just fucked up the timing.

If he set the cps as you have shown in the picture I'd be worried about the rest of my engine.

That's what I was waiting for Emik87t to clarify... His statement:

Leaves me thinking HE (Emik87t) moved the CPS after he got the car back.

I wasn't about to start ragging on the guy he paid to do it until that little bit was clarified.

Looks like the CPS was inserted incorrectly...you need to take it out, and follow the instructions in the TSRM on how to install it...
