timing light

SO i hooked up a timing light to the 1st plug at worked today and shined it at the crank. the notch was pointing at the 5 deg mark on the block. Does this mean 5 degrees advanced or 5 deg retarded? What should it be at and how do i change it? This is a stock supra btw with minor mods. thank you

ok so it should be at 10 degrees reatarded @ idle. what is the proper way to adjust this? thanks

steve, your diagnostics plug is under the hood,you can make a tool from a plug from a harness ,right so disconect the metal conectors from the plug with a small screw driver.cut two at 5inc or so tie together, thers your tool.ok in the diagnostics plug incert to Te1 and e1.then your ready for timing,the motor turns clock wise and the under pully passes 10 before 0 so 10degres before tdc ,would be seting the gun to 10 and ajusting the cam position sencer finding 0 on the pully.thats it your timed,its on the exaust side looks like a distributer but no wires.the book says 12 max.advanced 2deg is 12 adv btdc.well good luck.

Actually i'm pretty sure it's advanced not retarded. advanced meaning before tdc and retarded meaning after tdc. 10 degrees btdc= advance. Someone correct me if i'm worng.

I think you have it mixed up. But I am not 100% sure. Advance = 10+ retarded = 10-

Like think of someone who is smart (advanced) and someone who is not so smart (retarded) the smart one will most likely answer faster and the someone who is not so smart takes time to think about it, meaning delay. Thoughts how i see it. or maybe i'm just mixed up

It's based on what direction the pulley spins. It needs to be 10 deg BTDC.

the mark are btdc. set your gun to 10 then set the mark at 10 by moving the cam positioning sensor if you run out of room on the CPS your a tooth off pull it and move it one tooth over remember it spins when you put it in.(you prob. wont have to do this) *end of thread*
