timing belt question...

ok I've noticed for a while that my car has a slight miss to it but only at idle... or at least thats the only time I can hear it... now the other day I noticed that my timing belt was rubbing on my lower cover... this just started happening... now my question is... could my timing belt have stretched and would that cause the slight miss... and I'm looking into getting a new timing belt would it be worth it to get the greddy timing belt if I'm lookin at the 350-400hp range or would I be better with the stock one...

keep your stock timing belt. There is no difference in forces on a high HP motor as far as the timing belt is concerned.

Timing belt is a timing belt, especially on a non-interference engine like ours. Use whatever you can get the cheapest.

Timing belt is also unlikely to be the cause of a miss. That will likely be plugs, wires, something in the ignition system.

I've changed the plugs and wires with brand new plugs and upgraded wires and I still have a slight miss... but I do know that I need to change out my timing belt... b\c for all I know this belt has 233K on it... so the timing belt will get changed... and now that Iknow the greddy one makes no difference I'll just put a stock one back on it...

it is highly unlikely that the timingbelt is your miss problem unless it has jumped a tooth, but even then I dont really see it causing a miss, just a slight lose of power maybe. Either which way, change it.

on a side note while we are talking about timingbelts, I have yet to hear of anyone ever doing this, but it should be done atleast every 10,000 miles is pop out the cap off of the lower portion of the upper timing cover and loosen the bolt to the tensioner, turn the motor over by hand in the direction of rotation (clockwise) and then tighten the tensioner bolt back down. this re-adjustes the tensioner for any strech that might have devoleped in the belt being that the tensioner on our cars are not automatic adjusting. I do mine every other oil change (4 to 6 thou), but that is just me and from what I have seen, every 10,000 seems to be fine. if you are running stiffer valve springs and or higher lift cams, then it should be done more frequently.

Just did the timing belt, cam seals, oil drive seal and crank seal on the '90 Turbo we bought. Took me 6hrs for the whole job. Never did a Tbelt on a 7M before, only 5M and 3VZ. I bought everything at the dealership. I hate cheap parts, don't need to do that job again next year... :3d_frown: the belt I took off was stretched to the point where the tensioner spring was'nt even stretched. and the Oil drive & crank seals were leaking.

Since you replaced the plugs and wires and are replacing the timing belt, I am assuming you are going to check the timing also? Check your cam position sensor too if you have a Turbo.

Check your ignition coil packs (there are 3 of them) for voltage and resistance using a mulitmeter.

Make sure you have the ground wire for the ignition coils/ignition coil brace. Sometimes it comes loose or just breaks due to age and wear. When replacing parts it is easy to miss re-connecting that ground wire.

Is this car modified? Make sure your air/fuel ratio is OK.

Misses are hard to track down. I replaced the plugs, wires, all 3 coil packs, and the coil pack ground wire and it still missed. These needed replaced, so it was time to do it anyway. Then I checked and the timing was off some, and that cleared up most of the miss at idle - it still misses a little bit, however.
