is there any special why to put on the timing belt? can any one help? my 89 7mgte started backfiring after i did a hg change.i tried adjusting the cam sensor as soon as i push it down it backfire even more and shuts off, so now i just pulled it all the way up it wont die but backfires a lot. i tried setting the belt like 4 times, i line up all the marks and when go to put the belt on, it wont fit so i turn the cams a little to make it fit but my # on the crank is off every time.
its a 89 7mgte do i sit it at 10 or 0 degree?

set the crank at TDB (top dead center) for the #1 piston, you have to be sure its at top dead center, and it should be lined up with ZERO on the timing marks.

then position the cams straight up with the notches(on the cam gears) matching the notches on the plate, i think i had my exhaust one back one tooth so when you let the tensioner go, it tightens it all up.

only special tool i use was my hands and some socket wrenchs

edit: where are you in Ca????
