Thrust Washer, what happens when it goes out?

As the title says, I think that it what's causing me to not be able to drive in first gear. If I sit in neutral and push the clutch in, it feels the same in every gear. However when I start to go forward, and release the clutch it feels like the shifter is pushing back at me and it won't let me go into first gear. If I am able to get it into first gear once going if I slow down it will pop out of gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a bad thrust washer. MDC sells an R154 rebuild kit or you could always find another R154 to just swap.

It's been hard to find a R154, I've looked! I think that I'm just going to get the rebuild kit and rebuild it that way I know that I have good parts in it. I have about 450 hp and don't want to be doing this again with another used tranny. I just hope that's all that I need.

An r154 will pretty much lock you out of first gear unless you're going under 10MPH, personally i had to wait until about 7 or 8MPH if even that high.

I'm trying to do this from a stop though. I've never had that problem though when down shifting or just going from a roll.

I'm going to buy a rebuild kit for my tranny, should I do this myself or have someone else do this? I just need to get it fixed asap.

Not totally related but I figured I'd ask. I'm having a very hard time getting my car into reverse, it often involves me having to jam the lever very hard into reverse (being parked mind you). Could this be a similar problem or what?

If you need it done asap then I would with out a doubt let a tranny shop do it.

I paid $300 + parts to get my R154 repaired. The previous owner claimed that it was having the same problem as you, I decided to just take the transmission to the shop and get it sorted for once and for all before I installed it. They said the bearing cover plate is what actually got warped and then starved the thrust washer of oil. Powershifting and generally abusing the transmission causes that plate to warp and then the force of the shift beats on the thrust washer when it's not properly lubed.

You can see a picture of it here:

having trouble getting into reverse is normal, put it in second, first, then reverse, and it will just slide in, or, put it in first and bump the clutch quick if it wont go in. hauling on the stick is just stressing your linkages.

Personally... if I wasn't to rebuild the tranny myself, I'd have Marlin Crawler do it.

Marlin Crawler will replace worn gears, and inspect all tolerances, and they know WTF they are doing!!

Just put it in neutral, let the clutch out, put it back in, and try reverse again. According to the user manual. :)

I would go with Marlin Crawler, however I need to get this fixed asap. This is my daily driver for now, so I can't send it off.

Find a local shop that will work on manual transmissions. They know what they are doing and can get you up and running ASAP.

Thanks Nochez, I don't think that a manual tranny is all that hard to figure out from what some of the tranny people around here have told me. I'm going to take it to a shop on friday.

It's not that difficult to understand, but there are a crapload of pieces and breaking one while trying to remove it or dropping something and getting all the parts out of order could be a horrible way to learn how tough it could be.

I'm mechanically inclined and could probably do it, but in my mind it was well worth the price to get someone who's done it a thousand times before to work on mine.
