I was told if voltage is over 14V or something that even optimas do leak a bit of fumes.... I read it on their website as well, but I think they say it more as a disclaimer not that it really is any hugely measurable amount.

I have an optima battery relocated in my trunk, no fumes at all that I've noticed or anything. My voltage is 12.7V with the car off and 14.6V with the car running. I'll probably vent it eventually when it gets a permanent home back there.

Optimas are gell cells and yes, you do need a vent tube with optimas, they do vent a little... aight peace :chicken:

also why buy a kit? looks like all that is 20 feet of 2-gauge wire and a little box... just buy the wire

I had that summit one before, and to be honest, its kinda cheesy.

I have the Moroso one for the supra now, and its much nicer/higher quality....

Optimas will leak. I had a year old one in my car that started to leak out of the breather ports on the top. When I took it back for a replacement apparently this is a problem that Optima is aware of.

Jake where do you plan on locating it?

Jake, the moroso unit is very nice, and reasonably priced.
It has a nice flush top to it instead of the cheasy strap-over dome top on the summit one.
And it's blue ;)

I'm planning on the relocation, and i looked at the kits. I dont trust 2 gauge( starter pulls upwards of 130 amps, i pulled 124amps@10.8 volts on a vat machine yesterday) and i dont think i need the box. I plan to go the route of getting the welding cable and use the stock tie down bolted into the hatch. For the cost of that kit, i think its a bit under-done. just my .02

You need a box.
Have you ever seen a battery explode?
It is not pretty, and I would NOT like to be around it when it happens.

Wasnt aware that there was a chance of a battery exploding, what could cause that?

where at in the hatch silly? I was asking because I really like where your buddie Jeremie put his. That was a great location and hardly noticable.

Well, batteries are full of acid and plates. This acid slowly seaps out of the case over time and oxidizes the poles on the battery leading to corosion.
Anywho, that vapor is not good, and venting it will keep the cabin clean and you healthy.
As for explosions
Battery explosion
A battery explosion is caused by the misuse or malfunction of a battery, such as attempting to recharge a primary battery, or short circuiting of a battery. With car batteries, explosions are most likely to occur when a short circuit generates very large currents. In addition, car batteries liberate hydrogen when they are overcharged (because of electrolysis of the water in the electrolyte). Normally the amount of overcharging is very small and so is the amount of explosive gas developed, and the gas dissipates quickly. However, when "jumping" a car battery, the high current can cause the rapid release of large volumes of hydrogen, which could be ignited by a spark nearby (for example, when removing the jumper cables)...

Overcharging, which is charging a battery beyond its electrical capacity, can also lead to a battery explosion, leakage, or irreversible damage to the battery. It may also cause damage to the charger or device in which the overcharged battery is later used.
So yeah, the release of hydrogen gas, is a good reason to vent, and seal the battery in a case...

Look around the battery area. a little on the blurry side, but the previous owner had the battery blow up while driving, it's not a pretty thing as acid spewed everywhere eating the paint away.

Get a battery box....

Also, if the vapors are left unchecked & allowed to collect in the cabin, it will corrode the hell out of any bare metal.....
