Ok so i just bought a 1988 Toyota Supra(duh i know thats why im on this forum hehe) turbo with an auto. The body has 68k orig. miles on it and the owner told me the body was in great condition with no dents or dings. The only thing that is wrong with it is the interior is a bit torn, the car had some maaco job done on it and is chipping in a couple places but hardly noticable, and the motor is seized. I got it delivered two states away for $850 total. Let me know what you think...

I hope you dont tell me i got ripped off really bad. But the points that drew me in the most were the 68k original miles with a straight body. I know the engine is seized but im hoping I can fix it with a rebuild. Can anyone tell me if the average seize on a 7m is really drastic, like buy a new motor seize? or a hone out the cylinders a bit and throw some new rings and bearings on seize? Thanks much!

well, that's not a turbo, so the guy was BSing you there... if the motor is "seized" it's not repairable... that usually means the crank fused to the block due to lack of oil. just grab a 7mgte and drop it in, don't bother fixing an NA one. just my opinion. i think that's a decent deal.

I don't think that was a bad deal at all. If it were me, I'd swap in a turbo motor and 5 speed, but that's just me. Or rebuild the NA motor and you've got a good daily driver automatic.

Only real way to find out how bad the damage is, is to tear it down and check it out.
btw, is it me or is that an NA motor. from that angle it looks NA.

edit: ok it wasnt just me.

yeah that's odd... looks like a turbo gauge cluster, but an NA engine... hmmmm... i can see the boost gauge clearly. maybe it WAS a turbo and he put an NA in there. who knows.

Im sorry, you are all right it is a NA engine. The car was a turbo model then he seized that engine and didnt have enough for a new turbo motor so he dropped in a NA and seized that too. He then sold it to his buddy who wanted to make it a project but ran out of funds. so he sold it to me.

ya it was maroon, hopefully the paintchips arent too noticeable since i like that white, if its too bad, ill have to sand it down and NOT bring it to maaco. Maybe one of my buddys studying collision and repair here at Wyotech will paint it for me.

The only paint I'd do would be the engine bay(unless the paint job really sucks, which it doesn't appear to in the pics).
Since the engine has to be pulled anyway, go ahead and spray the engine bay white to match the exterior.

eh imo you got ripped....

strike 1: NA
strike 2: auto
strike 3: 86-88 style
strike 4: seized engine
strike 5: shitty paintjob and the engine bay is still original color

usually its 3 strikes and the car is out for me..... if it was RUNNING then 850 wouldnt be bad.... bad 850 for a seized engine na auto crappy interior crappy exterior car 86-88 body style car..... NO.

but good luck with it! hopefully youll fix it up and turn it from a dud into a stud.

strip it, prime it and repaint it, then drop a rebuilt gte w/ a r154 and you'll be good.

this just leaves the possibilites of customization at a higher level

IMO the first three strikes you listed arent really strikes for me. I bought a supra cuz i just love them whether its an auto, NA, or any style. I just feel good rollin in it <---(although it doesnt do much of that at all atm). But I have a W58 ready to drop in it off my mk2 beater thats been rebuilt, and a T3-T04 and all the goodies ready for the gte when I get it. Gonna have about $1500-2000 to fix it up once it gets here.

my point was with those things it shouldnt have been as much as you paid.... not that with those things its any less of a supra...those are things that should discount the price.

also have fun blowing up the w58 with a t4 turbo engine lol

GREAT FIND. To me it is just an empty canvas and the fun is just beginning. I like to do most work on my car myself since it saves you a shit load in labour costs. Think of it, the money you save in labour is just more money towards parts. If your unfamiliar with body work or mechanical, find someone that is, and tip him with a 24 of beer. It always works.

Just see how low you can go on the price. Also:

1. Go over the car and see what you can do yourself
2. Price out parts you'll need
3. look in a Trader magazine and see how much you'd spend on a decent condition supra and compare. Even if the cost is more it may be beneficial since mostly every thing will be close to new or new.
4. Start asking the guys here for parts. There are a lot of parts for sale on this forum and are a great price to.

If you do it this way, you'll definetly be proud of yourself with your accomplishments. The key thing here is sourcing parts and. DO MAJORITY OF THE WORK YOURSELF.

I also forgot to mention that every part that is good you can sell, and possibly get your money back depending on the purchase price of the car. I bought my '87 from my younger bro and paid 4000cad. the only thing on the car that is '87 is most of the interior. My engine is a '91 and most of the body parts are '89+. I wish I paid half the price that I did since I replaced so many parts. I intentionally bought the car as project car even though it was in great condition with 11500mi on the new motor and only a small rust patch the size of a quarter. GREAT FIND!

run the vin thru carfax and see how many miles it had on it before he put a
68K dash in it. The interior of a car will always tell how many true miles are on it.

Having said that...i wish i bought one with a blown engine..would much rather do that myself and know it's done right..an i've never rebuilt a 4 stroke. But i know i'd do it right;esp with help from this forum.
