Ok, I was at a racing shop 2 nights ago, and I was talking to one of the head guys there. I told him my problem (bhg) and asked what I should do. He told me to take the head off make sure it wasnt cracked or damaged, do the same with the block, and put an mhg on it.

Now my problem is here, he said that if the head and block were fine and unharmed, I could simply take the broke hg off and put the mhg on. No machining at all. And everywhere I have read that I should machine it so its ready for mhg.

The shop that told me this is world known and a very reputable shop. In fact most supra owners have at least one thing from them. Thats why Im haveing this problem. Because if it was someone else Id say he was off his rocker.

So my question is, what would you do? And any ideas on what I should do?

People have done it and gotten away with it...but why risk it...they might be reputable at selling parts but that doesn't mean they are 7m ninjas.

If you want to just replace the gasket you dont have to deck the block or head. Just make sure that when you get on boost you cross your fingers and pray you dont blow another headgasket. You will have to do this everytime you drive. So many posts about this and all have the same answers. If you want to have peace of mind and not do things twice, do it right the first time.
7m+mhg+halfass= Bhg

I'm pretty sure i would do this even if my 7m was touched by the hand of GOD.

But the thing is that unless you caught the bhg right at the beginning stages, the block will still be to rough for a mhg. Happened to me, I had the head machined, mhg scraped block clean, not out of spec, still bhg.

keep in mind that with a mgh if the deck and head are not decked then when you go to bolt the timing cover on the block it will not line up because the head will sit to high up.

Need to lay off the crack there.....:nono:

Timing Case and Block are machined to the same height from the factory.

Answered the OP in my build thread

If by "fine" they mean flat, level and with an RA of around 30 then yes!

I have an idea! You tell them, if you put the MHG without prepping and it leaks, will they pay for the re and re? See what they say then. ;)

I would suggest prepping it.

Thanks Ian for the answer in the thread.

Ill just go ahead with prep instead of taking there advice. I want the car to last me longer than a few months lol.

Thanks for the help, and for clearing up the mess.

Lots of different people work there. Maybe who ever told you that was not qualified to give an opinion because there is several people there that would be. So let just leave it at that now that you have the real answer.

Eh, the jz was very tempting, but my father did that, and I LOVE the torque from the 7m.

I may buy a shell later down the road and swap a jz motor in, but for now, its all about the 7m love.

Not bashing them or anything, just didnt make sense to me at all. And I mean, there shop was FILLED with supras, so just seemed odd.

IF on inspection the block and head met ALL the criteria I listed then Totan were correct in their statement, personally I have NEVER seen a 7M I'd be confident in doing this with ;)
