I have to lap my block and head after its been machined.
I could buy this precision cast iron lapping plate for $166.
It is 8" x 8" and weighs 20 lbs.

I already bought the diamond lapping compound.

What do u guys think?

Cheers,
Roy

I also read that post...but we all do not know much about this company.

We do know that many supra owners lapped their blocks and head and were successful and its been reccommended by the top guns of the supra community.

Roy

I am all for innovation...I hope this company does good because it will save me time from lapping my block n head.

But before people go diving in and believing everything they hear, they would hold back and let any company prove itself first with the 7m..Because it takes alot of work to redo the engine...money and time...

Roy

It would be hard to buy the cast and have it machined true for less money. You will not do too bad at that price. Diamond paste is nice, but for cost, I like emery flour, crisco, and gasoline. And I am not baking flamable cookies either!

The plate is already precision ground so it does not need to be machined.
The tolerance on the plate is .0005" which is more than enough.
It is specially designed plate for lapping and has the same specs as surface plate. The plate was most likely lapped on a surface plate. That is how they make surface plates. They lap a new surface plate on a already accurate one.

I was also thinking of buying a cast plate n get it machined to spec by good friend of mine. And believe me he can easily achieve mirror finish and flatness with his diamond cutters on his cnc.He was going to machine my head like to that to get a mirror finish but I had already given my block to another shop.
But this is too much mucking about. I'll just buy a lapping plate designed for lapping just like Ian ("IJ") suggested.

I paid $25 for a 5 gram syringe for the diamond paste.
This would probably do my head and block."1J" used 20 grams of diamond paste for 2 blocks and 2 heads.

Roy

I did not mean to say you need to machine the precision plate, I ment that it would be hard to buy another piece of cast iron, and then have it machined, to make your own plate, for any less money, then just buying the precision plate.

My bad...I did not read your post well..

I just noticed....you are the owner of Summit Import Perf.

I made my own lapping plate by using a piece of 3/4" thick granite (8" x 24") and buying two pieces of plate glass (1/4" thick) and gluing it all together. It worked awesome on my cylinder head but I didn't use it on the block because it was cheaper and faster to have the machine shop take care of that.

In general, you want your lapping plate to be softer than the material being lapped. This way, the charge stays in the lapper, and not the item being lapped. I am pleased to hear you got that glass to work. With glass, sometimes you end up lapping the glass and not the head.

I used a different style lapping tool. Mind posting a pic of yours?

I bought it from Mcmaster Carr..they are located in La..and ship overnight.
Go on their website and do a search for lapping plate.

My employer has an account with them so I just called and ordered it myself. I will pay it when the invoice comes in like a month. Cost $166.67. Weight = 20 lbs.

The box even comes with a US flag with the words "Made in USA".:icon_bigg

I will post the pic tonite when I get home.

Cheers,
Roy
