I searched and could only find 1jz location. Does anyone have diagrams or pictured instructions for the 7mgte thermostat? Also any tips when replacing would be helpful. Thanks.

Very easy to change...look in the TRSM Cooling System section (page CO-8). A couple things:

- Either use a Toyota stat or a Stant SuperStat at the stock temperature rating (190 deg F)...don't be tempted to get one at a colder rating.

- Cut the jiggle valve off (at the 12 o'clock position of the stat) with a pair of snips. This leaves a small hole for a bit of constant flow...end of trapped air problems.

- Get a new gasket for it.

Don't want to hi-jack this thread but I'm curious to replace mine, could T-Stats even if mine seems to be working, somehow have a malfunction where it doesn't open completely?? If that's the case and these don't cost much is it then worth it for me to just replace it?

I say this as I think my car is running just a little hotter than it should be and I want to make sure everything's spick and span. It might not be, and may be normal operating temps, just until I get my temp gauge installed I can't really judge much by my digital dash being at half way... don't know how much degree's that is.

They are cheap, even from the dealer. I tend to replace mine about every year just because.

Why ever year? Are they that prone to fail? is it only a MK3 thing that they can't get right after 20 years or just a general car problem for any car owner with thermostats getting shot?....

I dont think mine's ever been replaced... so It i think is due for one, i'm just curious as to why you'd replace it every year... unless that's their life span...?

Preventative maintenance. It's cheap and easy to replace. Why sit there and wait for it to fail?

thermostats are cheaper than heads

Best answer ever.

< $30 for gasket, t-stat, and rad cap from Toyota.

Same price as a good oil change and takes 1/3 the time. I believe it took me 10 minutes from 'Honey, I'm going to work on the car' to washing my hands afterwards.

because 7M heads warp like 2-3 thousandths for every 10 degrees or so overheated

Where did you get that "spec" from?

This is exactly it. I also tend to take the front end of my engine apart fairly often to check the timing belt, and that means pulling the thermostat housing off anyway... and if it's off, you might as well replace it.

guy at shop  dunno if its accurate or not. mentioned that these long I6 heads are bitches to overheat
Methinks you should not propagate it as gospel then.

Our cars can pretty easily hit 110-115C coolant temp after being shut off on a 90*F day. According to that guy, you would see up to 15 thousandths of deformation every time you drove the car, assuming overheating means anything over ~88C and he's speaking degrees F.

Do thermostats in those from the USA die that easy due to excessive weather temperature differences? Coldest here in sydney is probably 15* and warmest 35* in summer, so if they are prone to fail more often due to massive temperature differences and the fact it hits negatives often in north america... then that might make sense?

No idea... temp ranges here go from -5 to 38, and I've never had one die on me. Of course, that might have something to do with the fact that I replace it all the time, I guess.

Just seems like such a cheap part that can have such expensive consequences - why would you *not* replace it annually?

I would replace the housing bolts (2) atleast once... The bottom one corroded out on mine.. had to drill out the broken stud..
