I drop my girl off and get a little boost happy on the way back home..In the middle of parking and letting the turbo cool i hear a knocking sound.. I turn it off and let it sit a while then check the oil and it says is its LOW.. I get 1 quart of oil and pour it in.. when i do the dip stick reads above full 8 / and the tick is still there but lower... HOW does 1 quart fill the oil pan from low... and now *God Forbid* I might have a rod knock on my 1j 8-/

On the dipstick, the distance between the "low"(fill) mark and the "high"(full) mark is one quart (or one liter if you're metric). So if you're oil level was a little above the "low" mark and you add a quart of oil, the dipsticks gonna read that your oil level is above the "full" mark.

Heres another funny thing tho..theres no oil marks on the floor or anything no drips no drains no stains... so all my oil must have still been in the engine somewhere.. just not circulating.

If you have knock, you've got knock. I'm suprised you haven't started it up yet to check and report back.

When it's running, have someone press on the clutch and you stand out side and watch the crank pulley to see if it moves forward/backward.

A loose balancer will sound a lot like RK and it can come and go (usually has to do with load). Its a fairly common problem on the 7M and especially on motors that have been rebuilt as very few people put them back on correctly. The bolt gets loose, the balancer wobbles, the keyway gets damaged and over time the balancer slips and "knocks". Just checking the bolt for torque usually doesnt prove anything. You actually have to remove the balancer and look at the key and keyway.

When oil is missing from the engine (it can't get "stuck" anywhere) and there aren't any obvious oil leaks, that usually means that it is being burned in the combustion chamber...which could be caused by bad valve stem seals (common 1J problem), or bad piston rings...among other things...

As for your knock...I've heard rod knock come and go before. Sometimes it will appear at different rpms, different engine loads...it can do weird things sometimes. But all of my experience with rod knock has been with 7M's.

I would do as the others have said and check your crank pulley (harmonic dampener)...the bolt holding it on sometimes gets loose, and the pulley will knock around and cause a sound that is very similar to rod knock. I think replacing your oil pump and sender was a bit premature...but obviously it couldn't hurt.

self healing motor from toyota
5m, 7m,
was built in 1982 though the years only some test supras came with this motor
after years of testing the jz engine's was released
a stock bottom end that can running 30psi of boost
nissan built a simuler car (skyline) without this self healing tech. and ordered toyota to stop makeing this car thats why the supra was not made after 1998

How long did you let the oil settle into the pan before your first test? Perhaps you weren't a quart low. Regardless, a little over full is not going to hurt anything.

Sorry, those both seem pretty obvious. But, neither have been mentioned thus far.

The oil turned out to not be low at oil.. I suppose it there was oil still draining down although i gave it about 5 minutes and checked it again.. its really weird but im hoping it was the harmonic balancer scince theres been no knock scince i been driving the car the past 3 days.. =) ..Gonna check the HB 2morro..

Unless your engine is majorly fubar'd (barely runs its so bad) then its not rod knock.

After hard pulls my injectors were always louder the normal on my cars. Also its probably just valve lash if anything mechanical. On my cars I had 2 pulleys seperate and they just squeeled and didn't knock or tap.

In my first MKII, the crank had been rigged before I bought the car. It wore out the keyway on them, and someone did a pretty damn good job of rigging it. I drove the car 6-7 months with it, and it did dine until I had A/C work done, and I guess tensioning the belt did it in. I had what i thought was RK that came and went. I was able to re-rig it a few times, but when the valve guide seal let go, I bought a new crank and had the motor rebuilt. If only I knew about forums back then.
