That is not a problem.
It has a fan clutch and it should always be spinning when the engine is on. If it's not, you need to replace the fan clutch.

It is the 91 model with the toyota logo. It is the largest radiator fan. I can seem to remember it should turn on and off to cool the radiator. Thanks.

The largest radiator fan is the belt driven one so I assume you're talking about the big electric one in front of the radiator. It should not be running all the time.

Is your fan the stock mechanical fan, or has it been replaced with an electrical unit?

artorush - A stock supra can have up to 4 fans. They are:

  • Electric pusher fan in front of the radiator.
  • Mechanical main fan in back of the radiator in the center.
  • Electric pull fans (sometimes one, sometimes two) on the drivers side in back of the radiator.

Which one are you talking about?

the belt driven fan:

The belt driven fan has a bi metal thermostatic check valve that when the tempurture gets hotter the bimetal expands and lets hydraulic fluid make a "connection" between the fan and the water pump shaft. maybe you have a stuck open check valve.
At least that's how Some American cars are, don't how Supra's do it.

Hmmm.. sounds reasonable. Because I know I've seen the fan off when the engine was running. Dammit. Does any know where the check valve is placed on the 7m gte?

The check valve should be in the clutch itself, it's not some thing you replace by it self, you gotta replace the whole clutch.

Also, the clutch fan should never stop. It may run slow when it's cold, but it is not supposed to stop. If it does, either something is physically obstructing it, or the clutch has failed.

Just read about it. It's true, it should always run. Thanks a lot for the information. :icon_razz
