So I'm thinking of spending a week in July or August with my wife, 18 year old daughter and 5 year old son in Southern California. I can get all of us to Santa Ana and back for $325 with my frequent flyer miles, and spend nothing on hotels with my frequent stayer points. This is the one and only benefit of living out of a suitcase all the time.

We usually move around a lot on vacation, so I was thinking of hitting the LA area and San Diego and wouldn't mind a day or two inland if there's something within 100 miles of either of those areas worth seeing. So keeping in mind that this is a family trip, my question is mostly for people living in the area or who have absolutely loved what they have done on their own vacations: What should I be sure to do? What's the best beach (not overcrowded)? Should we spend the $ on a whale tour? Is there anything in Riverside or anywhere else inland? Should we bother with Hollywood and the LA scene? What about little known places that shouldn't be missed? Historical places? Shopping for the wife/daughter? Anything else?

Thanks.

I'm sure the family might enjoy Six flags, Knotts Berry Farm, or Disneyland, or anyother theme park....

x2 haha....

Um anyways San Diego is awesome...if you want some culture then travel down to the mexican border town of Tecate, Mexico. I've been going there for 4 years and building houses for poor people...Even just going down there and witnessing the culture is an awesome expierence....

Thanks for the tips. I'd post a pic of said daughter, but for one she's been unavailable for the past year and a half, and for two I wouldn't throw her to the wolves. :biglaugh:

Okay, so far the suggestions that sound good to me are:
1. Tecate
2. ONE of the theme parks (more for them than for me)
3. I'll take a look at the Gas Lamp District of San Diego

We need at least one day at the beach, so what's the one or two I should pick? What do we need to see/do in LA? Is there anything within 100 miles inland that we need to see/do? Is there an island trip worth taking?

Thanks! :bigthumb:
