The opposite - Turbo to NA

I tried searching... but everyone wants to take this conversion the opposite way!

I have my 7MGTE powered MA71 already... but i'm looking at getting a MA61 Supra as a daily-driver. I've found one that's cheap (because its in pieces) with a 7MGTE ready to drop in it.

I don't really want another turbo 7M as my daily driver - the idea is to save money on fuel!

So... anyone have advice on turning a GTE into an NA engine? Will it just be easier/better to pick up an old 7M-GE engine for it?

Thanks. :)

That's the beauty of turbo is it not?, All the power when you want it, and still good fuel econemy if you keep your foot out of the pedal? I am not trying to change your mind or argue. I just thought fuel economy was about equal in both turbo and N/A?

if your getting a ma61 that has been preped for a gte and you dont gte it..

ill come and smack you myself. i have riden in ma61 w/a 7mgte many times, driven it a few and wow, there is no way my car could compare to it, now.. if i could have gotten a ride in the ma61 2jzgte car.. that would have been awsome.

MA717MGTE: Haha, yeah? Is it that good? Maybe it would be worth keeping it turbo'd...

Joel: True, I suppose, but all that power is so tempting! :D
I just know that if it has a turbo, i'm gonna be boosting it everywhere!

Thanks for the comments (the useful ones).

Anyway... this was just a request for comments, I'm not definately buying this MA61 and haven't decided whether going to NA is worth it.

I am not saying im right, I was actually posing a question? I will go read the gas milage thread now and see what's what? Self control takes practice...:)

you are going to gain fuel economy just due to the fact that the MA61 is significantly lighter. As stated before the fuel economy is not going to be really any different as long as you keep your foot out of it. If you are gunho about fuel economy going N/A, then get a GE motor cause the GTE motor does have a slight ineffiency due to the lower compression ratio of it.

Example of it here is my car. Normal GE motors have 9.2:1 CR and the turbos have 8.5:1 CR and my motor has 8.9:1 CR. Long story behind this, but to make it short, everything else remaining the same, I lost about 1.5 mpg by droping from 9.2 to 8.9. So without having done it or tested it, I would suspect that a drop from 9.2 to 8.5 would cause a lose of in the neighborhood of 2 to 3 mpg. although its not much and we are really splitting hairs here, it is something to think about.

Put a SP88 on it. Won't spool until redline and you now have an NA around town :yelrotflm

Seriously, get a civic or nissan for a daily driver if you are looking for fuel economy.

I was planning on doing the same thing over summer myself. I want to do one of the 7mge swaps into a toyota truck. I have an extra gte motor but I'd like to swap a ge. Reason being I want some decent mileage (keep in mind it uses regular not premium) and also not lose control of the backed whenever I tap the gas.

I did the reverse swap for a guy last fall. He blew his turbo engine and had access to a cheap N/A. There was a couple of snags but nothing too major. Aside from changing the ignitor pack and the ecu, the only thing that comes to mind is the accelerator cable was different. If I think of anything else i'll post it up.

its not going to be any different then a NA > T swap. Youll need new ECU and new motor matching the year your car came off.

Put it in and go.

I used to have a 3g accord, anything that broke on that car was under $100. It was well over 200k miles when the headgasket blew. Swapped a new engine in, and sold it for a decent profit. That's when I bought my first supra :D.

If you really care about gas mileage buy a car that gets better gas mileage. Like a Toyota Paseo or something. Do not convert a turbo to NA, leave the turbos for people who actually want a turbo. And besides, you won't get a significant gas mileage increase by going NA unless you're driving hard all the time.
