the fender well discovery

about two days ago i decided to strip out my back seats and all the moldings and plastics in the rear of the car , the idea was to find out what i was working with so i could install some new speakers. guess what i found
RUSTED OUT FENDER WELLS
so i started doing what anyone would do, i started tapping with a rubber mallet to see how much damage im looking at.
lets just say its rusted through and i have a nice hole that i can easily see through from the hatch
i know its bad but i would really like to save her so
can anyone tell me where i can get some rear fenderwells, i have no problem cutting the old ones out and welding in some new ones i just dont know where to find some new ones

well, knowing bodywork and rust..... if the fenderwells are that bad.....id start looking at the rest of the car real seriously before i decide to fix it. the probe in my gallery is a perfect example, the outside of the car is perfect... the floors appeared solid from the bottom...but the doors were rusted out, i replaced them... then had a wiring issue that required removing the carpet.....man what a surprise.... the seams of the floor were so swelled with rust they came out with the carpet. the floor had rubberized coating on the bottom so you could not see the rust and it held the floor nicely so it felt solid.



moral of the story.... rust is sneaky id be pulling the seats and carpet and assesing the rest of the car....a roller body may be cheaper and easier

depends what price are you looking on paying. Junk yards for sure. But try champion toyota. or go to their webstie toyotaworld.com and go to the link stated online parts you can see the illistration and than go from there. gl

I'm pretty sure they are still available from the dealer...thats where i got mine. give champion toyota a call.

(I had the same problem as you...see my signature for the fix)

no rust whatsoever

what i think happend is that the undercoating that was in the rear wells was cracked and it just held the moisture on the metal (i live in salisbury md on the eastern shore) thus causing the rot

like 5 min from campus

I'm with you there. It seems (IMO) that its mostly targa tops. Whether it has something to do with the seals or the fact that i aslo live near salt water, i don't know. But every time that i've parted or repleced them i always find a healthy portion of rust. 2 targas being my own cars.

THis is quite common ive found 3 supras like this... my aerotop is ok but hardtop has a 5cm spilt...ive come to the conclsusion that its spot where alot of the body joins up and the thick application of soundeadner has cracked allowing water to seep in and RUST occurs........its not hard to fix its the issue that toyota has made the supra so if you want to take 1 thing off you need to pull half the car apart!

also pop riveting metal over the top should be only a temp solution welding in new metel is the way to go. I dont know about USA but in australia if you rocked up to the PITs/Roadworthy station they would knock you back for that!!

the pop rivet solution is one that i found on here
another member had the same problem and he cut out all the bad metal then riveted in some new metal and used some jb weld to seal the edges then used por15 over the whole thing so it wouldnt rust
i dont forsee a problem with this method but if you or anyone else does please let me know

well I wouldnt trust that method as if at anytime JB welds cracks, por 15 comes off then rust could come back.....with welding if you butt weld the join nicely then a coat of por15, sound deadner nobody will ever notice its rusted out!

Since I use my supra to go to work ive used some of that 2 part stuff that you knead into like dogh and blocked the hole then shit loads of aspelt spray...once my MA70 is running I will fix the Hardtop next
