Agreed. 3'' from the turbo back....very humble tone in cab.
hmm thats weird...Ive had the 3" turbo back with no cat now for awhile and with the windows up i can barely even hear my exhaust. now while the car was down for some "goodies" this winter i went up to a 4" cat back.:naughty:

well.... then again I also re-did all of my underbody coating a few years ago, along with sound deadening the entire hatch....a few extra pounds but a nice luxury.

I added a 2nd muffler (Vibrant brand) instead of a resonator (pic below). With the cat and 2 mufflers, my exhaust is not too loud. It does drone if the cruising RPM's are low, so sometimes I cruise at a lower gear to raise the RPM's and then I get no drone.

Apex'i makes a cool silencer for my N1 muffler. It has a valve and a spring that opens under higher exhaust pressure to allow more flow. My car was almost as quiet as stock with this silencer. They claim virtually no loss of power, although my car felt a little slower, but it might only feel that way because it was so much quieter.

My exhaust is 100% stock. I can't even hear it running. :biglaugh: The only thing I hear going down the road is wind noise by the rear view mirrors.

My 86.5 had 3" exhaust from turbo back with a magnaflow dual tip and it droned bad running around town. On the open road it was not that bad but you could still hear it.

resonator

+1. I have an 18" resonator, a high flow cat and a Magnaflow muffler and it's great. Very little drone. Just a slight hum if I'm in 5th from 2000 to 2400 and it's not even that noticeable. At all other times there is no drone.

my exhaust is half ass mig welded pipe with an apexi can on the end

Drone is just a particular low frequency of the engine/ exhaust flow that causes the sound, similar to bass from a subwoofer. 7M's seem to drone more than JZ engines, i think its due to exhaust flow and piston stroke, as the 1jz particularly has a very short stroke (under square).

Most round can style mufflers like the Apexi N1, or Magnaflow will be louder and drone more than a oval style muffler. Remember, the bigger the muffler body the more sound it can absorb. If you look on the JDM jza70s' which 99% of them have aftermarket cat back on them, they are 3" and have huge oval mufflers and are just about as quiet as stock.....you can harldy hear thenm inside the cab.

Resonators will help and obviously a larger muffler body, when a cat is installed it also does tend to make it quieter and take more of the drone resonance out. Vibrant makes a great resonator and it fits in the stock location, which can olny fit about a 12" resonator. Tekdeus has it on his car and it made it alot quieter.
