I can't get away from this drone! :1zhelp: It's killing me:aigo:, I can't carry on a conversation or listen to the radio while driving. I have a 935 motorsports DDP recir), high flow cat, all 3" piping to turbo muffler (3rd one now). The turbo muffler kills airflow, but it's tolerable inside now. I debating just getting an electric cutout for max flow situation, rather than keep trying mufflers. From all my lurking it looks like a tanabe muffler would be the best choice for sound/power reasons? Is anyone running a setup similiar to mine? If so can you comment on the noise level inside the car?

Electric cutout right after DP, with quiet exhaust. Open it up when you want to be loud and then close it so you can talk inside of car.

Elec. cutout is $150 and you probably spent more than that with the 3 different mufflers.

I'm even considering add a resonator too. It's not the volume, it's the damn drone...hind sight is always 20/20. I'm leaning towards the cutout more and more. I don't like the sound of a cutout, but I've got to get rid of this drone.

Mine's not that bad actually. I've got the Blitz muffler IIRC, 3" exhaust from Turbo exit all the way back. Shit was lout as fuck when I first bought the car, had no cat....drone was HORRIBLE, and LOUD inside the car with the windows up. As soon as I put a cat in, it dropped down to almost quiet in the car itself.

Agreed. 3'' from the turbo back....very humble tone in cab.

I can't imagine what it would be like without a cat. This may sound really redneck, but has anyone tried using a glasspack? Maybe a glasspack then a straight through muffler like a magnaflow or something?

My red car was like yours, 3" straight and a had a N1 can in the back. Sure LOUD and fun at first but then it gets really annoying. Trim inside the car vibrated on certain rpms. I was starting to hate my car more and more so I sold it. I would imagine it would be a lot worse if your car is auto...

My new black car has a recirculated DDP cat and Tanabe SHM. I fucking love how quiet my car is!!! Listening to the radio is a whole new thing and talking without shouting is sweeet.

Any exhaust system designed by one of the "big" manufacturers will likely incorporate a significant amount of R&D (eg. muffler/resonator/piping choice) to reduce or eliminate drone...unfortunately, on the one-off systems fabbed up by the local exhaust shop or similar, this is not practical.

It is generally not just the muffler that will eliminate this drone, it is a combination of muffler/piping/resonator choice.

Running HKS DP. BIC Test Pipe, and Tanabe SHM and theres hardly any drone at all, even at 70mph you can hear the feint hum of the exhaust but its pleasent to drive around.

I'm still open Down Pipe, and I've just gotten used to it.
I've got a 3" magna flow cat, and 3" Apexi N1 exhaust with silencer waiting to be put in still though, seems people around here can't figure out how to bend 3" piping without it collapsing in on itself.

I've got a 3" DDP, 3" cat, and 3" RS-R GTII exhaust, and there's some drone without the silencer but it's not bad at all. With silencer it's actually pretty quiet :) Strange, since the exhaust is basically just a pipe with some perforations in the muffler can...

Adampecush is probably right, a one-off or custom exhaust won't be as quiet as a name brand one just because of the extra R&D they do.

Is there a particular resonator that those of you have one installed like? Or one from a particular manufacturer? I'm setting up for my 3" exhaust from the turbo back, probably going with a magnaflow muffler and good quality 3" cat. Figured as long as I'm going to that much trouble I'd go ahead and plan for a resonator as well but I don't know which are the most effective for our engine and turbo combination.
