its is a bit difficult to keep sounding plausible in your mind if you are a practical thinker, but...
one - not a lot of things in the first two movies is legit (i havent bothered to see Tok. Drift.) so you have to get over it.
two - i think under the circumstances, it worked well. it would be kinda silly if he went to a skyline importer or tuner, something higher up, and laid down a crapload of money with identification (i'd figure that would be necessary) to get a new car. and then they couldnt show him painting it since its new...so he'd be purchasing his coolness instead of "earning" it...lol. in this case he took a beater primered skyline and made it a lot nicer...supposedly.

and what do you mean NEVER showed? like its been said...its at the beginning of the second movie...at least one DVD version had it...maybe it was the special edition?

Wait the red car was supposed to be a prelude? I might be wrong but im 98% sure that the red car was a 3000gt, SL of course as it was front wheel drive. Look at around 00:53 and 1:33 you can clearly see the 3000gt tailights.
