Alright, well I thought I mine as well get a build thread going. I didn't plan to do what I am currently doing, but I got lucky so I decided to make some changes.
I just bought a '89 Supra turbo Auto on March 25, 2009. The car has 130,000 on it. Well when I bought the car I knew it needed some work. I drove it home, and everywhere for 2 days. I put 670 miles on it, no issues. The rear end though makes a good amount of noise...
Also the ABS light is on due to someone cutting the line, I don't know if they did that because it was acting up or what. The car also had a LACK in power I was pretty upset..
It needed a tiny amount of body work, and I just wanted a nice stock running Supra. I decided that because the engine bay was so dirty I would just pull the motor and put new gaskets, timing belt, water pump, and seals on the motor. That includes installing a new HG.
Here is the motor bay as you can see not very clean.
The Journey Begins!
The first thing I always do is remove the hood when I take these motors out, so I did that, kind of sucks when no one else is there with you!
I started by doing the exhaust side first, that is where I have always started..
I got to the turbo I was curious as to see if the fins were bent and if it had any shaft play. Amazingly it has " zero " shaft play, no radial, or vertical.
Of course good luck taking these motors out with a radiator in the way, that was next.
Well since all of my friends truly are never available " conveniently busy I call it " I always pull my motors and transmission by myself. Not very smart, but when things have to get done you just do it.
The motor and transmission are now free.
The engine bay is now without a motor, thank god. As you can see extremely dirty. I guess the owner told me the exhaust manifold gasket went out and put that huge black, grease mark on the back.
What your looking at is the EGR cooler, it covered in oil. The spark plug galleys were full ( to the top ) of oil, the valve cover bolts were so loose I took 3 of them off with just my fingers. The whole motor has oil, and dirt all over it.
I started to take the motor apart slightly just to get it ready for cleaning.
PART #2 (The call)
Amazingly I got a phone call from a ( kid ) selling a Supra. I offered him $500.00 for his manual Supra turbo '88 like 3 weeks ago. I knew he wouldn't take it, but he called and said it's yours if you want it.
I jumped up with cheer. I got the car home on a dolly. He told me it stopped running so I didn't care much I got a '88 Turbo with a manual, and a JDM motor.
The good news about everything is the head was re-done completely. I have a full 3" exhaust, HKS air filter, 5-speed transmission with a mint rear end.
I spent 1 hour and got the car to run, sadly it has rod knock. Darn!:3d_frown:
It is okay because now my plans changed for my '89 I am now doing a 5-speed swap because I have every part!
So Now I am in the process of taking everything out of the engine bay.. I am painting it black, I decided I mine as well paint the car the color I want.
So now I am taking the whole front, bumper, fenders, cross member off.
pictures will be up tonight.
