i am serious..almost anything can be done to a car just depends if you do it right and you have the right skills. ive seen convertable trucks with a power roof that folds back up, now if you can do that then a targa would be a piece of cake...and yes i do have the money to own and maintain a supra and i was looking to rebuild the car too.. just dont want to spend all the money driving far away to pick one up and i wouldnt want to put all the miles on it driving it back so i would haul it and that would be even more exspensive in gas so i guess in some cases it wouldnt be worth it, it just depends on the condition of car...
WTF do you think you're buying?

It's NOT a rare Ferrari it's a Toyota it's meant to be driven..... :nono:

no shit didnt say it was. i just wouldnt want to put all the miles on a project to be. why would i if i didnt have to. all the nice supras ive found that are in my price range are about 500 and ^ miles away that is quite a bit especially when it would be the first time driving the car, not knowing if it is dependable or not just plain stupid..

*facepalm*... that is all

I agree with IJ... plus if a car is that clean travel for it.

I live in Central FL, I got my 89 in Tenn on vacation, because it had 57k original miles, now it has 62k on it.

Whats your price range, I'm in a good mood right now and I'll try and find one for you WITH A TARGA in Iowa or one of the adjoining states.

Seriously its not worth the time or money and your just going to end up with a crappy looking finish unless you pour thousands of dollars into it.

Supra's aren't that expensive nor are they all that rare, I got my turbo targa for 1250 and there were several others around that I had the choice of. And before you say oh you must live in a major city or on in the south/west states; I live in Nova Scotia Canada, possibly one of the most deprived places of motorsports and sports cars around.

There is absolutely no reason to try and frankenstein a targa onto a hardtop.

no it just all depends on if you know what your doing, if you know how to do the body work and properly put the support to the roof in the right places and if you did it your self it would only cost you the targa top from an original targa and the piece of your roof you cut out can be cut up for braces or other scrap metal laying around, and then your fiberglass for waterproofing and shaping where the targa would sit in and then bondo or something then paint it.

manuals only and the turbo 7mgte or 7mge no swaps bone stock or as close as you can get to it. less than 150k on chassis and i have found some in chi. and st. louis but there none in iowa (for sale) unless im lookin in the wrong places. i did see a pretty clean mk3 downtown des moines today, it made my day. well i can probably get like $6000 right now but less if possible cause i want to save some for parts and mods. and i could sell my truck which would give me more money but have to have the car first before i sell truck. and thanks for helping me

just to clear this argument up: i wasnt planning on cutting into my roof to make a targa, i would just buy a targa. i just was sayin that it is possible and wondering if anyone has ever done it before. but carry on with your pros and cons with the targas i would like to hear more becasue i really want a targa but i wanted to know if it was worth having it..

This is such a bad idea. Just buy one with a Targa. If the car Toyota spent millions designing has a top that leaks, you aren't going to make one in your back yard that doesn't. These cars are cheap, not hard to find and a ton of fun. 8000 will get you a mint example with good mods. To the rest of the world that is not a lot of money. On this forum you would think you could buy a house for that...

Alight I got a motherload from Missouri:

1988 turbo possibly targa cant tell from pics, 70k miles no price: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/998474829.html

1987 turbo targa, seems to need a lot of work, no mileage $750: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/990164895.html

1988 turbo targa, engine is currently out of car at a machine shop, no mileage $1500: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/985669673.html

1991 turbo, doesn't say targa or not, bhg, no mileage $2000: http://stlouis.craigslist.org/cto/987086524.html

This one is something I concocted on my own:

1988 no motor 5 speed $300: http://stlouis.craigslist.org/cto/1009972854.html

1G-GTE 2.0L twin turbo engine complete with auto tranny (sell that part) less than 50k miles, $400: http://stlouis.craigslist.org/pts/999585838.html

I can keep looking if none of those strike your fancy.

i have looked at all of these...first one is an auto, second one i need it to be running or at least need to know whats wrong with it and what to fix, third one the engine is out that means it could be missing some parts and i could end up spending more on parts then what i did for the car.. and the last one that manual tranny mated to auto ds or differential screws with me idk if thats such a good idea..you tell me cuz i was interested in that one, sounds nice he also said the speedometer is off and i know thats nothin big but i dont know how to fix it i know for trucks and stuff you can get the ecu chipped and it will correct it so maybe an EMS? you dont have to look anymore if you dont want to lol you will probably just found all the same results as me, if i find a targa for sale then it usually leaks or its a auto or somethin that i dont like i will just have to wait i guess for the "perfect" one! i dont have very good patience either i tend to rush into things

Not to discourage you from the world of supras, but you need to understand that these cars need lots of love and attention... The kind that only money can buy.

If you can do the work yourself, that is one thing, but it is still bloody expensive.

Before I even started modding my car, I spent well over $5000 on it (in just over 2 years) to get it in tip-top shape - just keep this in mind before you buy something you can't afford.

You can always wait a year or 2, keep the truck for now, and then buy a supe in MINT condition when you can afford it.
