now i know most of you probably live in paradise. what with the grass always being greener on the other side. but where im from i get rain in unpredictable times.

last time i tried to take off ther targe top the day was great till these unpredictable showers started. now if i recall, my favorite movie, the fast and the furious dud took the top off one handed with a few jiggles. my question, i dont need to take it off in seconds b ut would rather have it so i can put it on in seconds.

have you guys ever seen fasteners where we dont need a tool box in the back to remove or reinstall the top?

You can get a cheapo cordless drill and put a bit the size of your targa fasteners... Really speeds up taking it on and off.

There's some guy working on some type of quick release system for our targa but I have no idea how far the concept has come. It's a pretty recent thread so I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to search for.

i thought about the cheapo cordless drill and bit. i was just looking for clean set up. baybe a little more unique than "18v cordless drill with a 2 speed transmission and 12 optional torque settings" [said with a hillbilly salesperson accent]. no idea on who the fella was with the great idea?

Just get good with a ratchet and torx bit.
I can get the targa on or off in about a minute.
Sure it's no "Snap off, Snap back in." but unless you go from sunshine to hurricane in 30 seconds it's not a problem.

lol sorry. im a search whore, i just never would have though hardware. that was the one synymon? (not an english major) that did not pop into my head. but good looking out.

its just one of those hassles that bugs me. like when your starving but cant get the wrapper off sandwich, and in the process use so much force on the wrapper that sandwich pops out and falls to the ground.

and working at a hardware store its hard walking by those $20 drills and makingexcuses why i shouldnt get one. maybe ill just cut my losses and get one

Do what I did to avoid targa problems, get a hardtop.

Seriously, it isnt that bad. Like 5 min total to take it off and get it in the trunk. Try the drill idea.

To really answer his question, the MKIV has a safety latch that will hold the targa on long enough for you to notice the rattling and noise from it not being tightened down. Pop the safety, push up at speed, and you get the F&F scene...

MKIII doesn't have such a thing, so if you forget to bolt it down, you get the unintentional F&F scene.

If it's raining, once the top is popped in, get in the car and start tightening (IN SEQUENCE OR YOU STRIP THE THREADS), a few drops might leak in while doing that, but the targa IS a structural member of the car when bolted in...

thats a good point. it would be worth the few drops of rain occasionally for the rigidity. cause it would definately be a sad day when after i rig up a quick release system and try and corner a little to quick. then ill have no top to keep me dry when it rains:cry: but think of the weight savings id have after that :naughty:

my record time was a minute with my ratchet

You could just not bolt it down. Makes taking the targa off so much faster, all you gotta do is accelerate...I did that once...:3d_frown:

twice here. heh. bending it back into place didn't work the second time, hehe
