Targa Seals - what year?

Hi Folks:

I have been researching my seal problem for a while now, suffice to say that I have a leaking roof, and a wet pair of jeans to go with.

I tried calling Champion Toyota in Austin, they say all the roof seals are discontinued.

Can I install the seals from a 89-92 on my 87? They are different, but look similar. Has anyone tried this?

Old part number was replaced by the new one.

I really doubt they're discontinued as well, most of the time it seems the parts people don't care to order from Japan (I still can't fathom why this is...).

Also, the reason they leak is because of the driprail to targa top seal. Pull the driprails and seal it to the targa with a good sealant (I used black window sealant), do NOT fill the drip rails though... you'll understand what I mean when you do it.

Seals are installed without any adhesive (new seals have several spots that have adhesive backing, THAT'S IT, NOTHING MORE). Previous owner used silicone to put the seals in thinking it would stop the leak, took me HOURS to remove the seals. Also, try not to stretch them as they won't fit and they won't seal.

Getting the top on the first time is going to be tight, use silicone spray lubricant on the seals to help it slide (it's good for the seals as well). It will take a bit of massaging to get them to fit as they're made a bit large in places and will form fit to seal.

also ive seen this tar like stuff, was like a strip and was only used on the corners. pushed the seal up a little bit to make a tighter fit so you wouldn't get leaks at the corners. i saw this done on a newer toyota and was told it work very well since you shouldnt even have water getting behind the seal. sealent in the tracks is a no no, unless wat poodles said which is prolly the same thing i am thinking of except with a diff product.

the seals should be the same as there was no body differences except for the f.bumper, rear tails, and moldings.

Yea...After 1 1/2 years of leak-free service, my targa seals decided to give it up tonight while in the midst of this nice 3 day constant shower in the southeast. Plopped my ass down in a wet ass drivers seat tonight due to the front targa seal leaking right where it butts against the DS window.

Looks like i'll be redoing my drip rails as soon as the rain stops...ugh....

This is excellent information. If I can't make this work from this I've got problems.

Moy, I am gonna call Curt tomorrow. Do you have a non toll free number? Most of these numbers won't work across borders.

I am also going to take in these part numbers to my dealer and see what the deal is - I'll post the results.

On another note, I have tracked down a source for the drive shaft bearing - from SKF. I'll make a new thread about this.

Thanks again!

Neil

Haha, nope. Elmhurst is a good hour drive at least from where I live.

Elmhurst Toyota/Scion is a sponsor over on Supraforums. I asked Curt about price/availability for targa seals about a month ago, and that was his response.

If you need a quick/temporary fix for your seals, use black electrical tape over the spots where the targa meets the rest of the body. That's what I'm using on mine right now and I haven't had a leak since. Ghetto mods FTW!

I just gave those part numbers to the guy at the dealer here, and he came back with 2 day delivery, and $38 CAD.

So it seems that by default they look up the wrong part - maybe the trip piece that screws to the roof? Anyway, it's all good now.

Thanks for all your help!
