ive noticed that my supra makes a slight tapping noise when it is up to temperature and at idle. it sounds to me like its coming from the topend, its not really loud and its not constant

Yeah, it's often valve clearances another possibility which I've heard can cause tapping and knocking sounds are exhaust leaks at the head.

I would describe manifold leaks as more of a popping sound but yes. Either way even if your valve clearance isnt the issue, its always a good idea to check/adjust it.
