hey guys so i am taking off my tranny again, i just recently did the clutch a couple months ago and when i did it i had bought a toyota rear main seal but then i ripped it. being the only car i had i ran down to my baseement and pulled out this ebay rear main seal to cover me for the time being. of course it is leaking so i just bought a new felpro one and this time i can take my time since i bought a daily. so since i have the tranny off is there anything else that should be replaced? the clutch is new, pilotbearing, that other bearing (forget the name) have been replaced. should i bother changing out the input shaft seal?

if your rear main was leaking alot and slinging oil around the bellhousing you may have oil soaked the disk. If so its doomed. just be aware of it in case.

nah it's not leaking alot. i can see oil on the bottom of the engine which bothers me but it doesn't leave marks on the driveway. i figure i am leaving to canada for a 2 day track event so thats like 3k miles on my car in about a week. so i rather have everything tip top shape and not trust the ebay seal. and taking of the tranny is pie now after doing it so many times lol.

well there is a proceedure in the TSRM for checking the input shaft play, and unless the seal looks like its leaking I wouldnt bother replacing it. Even then I probably wouldnt tear into the trans unless I was prepared to do a full freshen-up.

The only other thing I imagine you are already planning is new fluid in the trans (unless you plug the tailshaft, its best to drain it before pulling anyway). Other than inspecting everything when its apart, not much else to say.

my rear main is leaking also and I just replaced it with a toyota oem...same boat as you but the clutch still feels great! Sounds like you are set to go man. Need a hand let me know.

nope it doesn't look like its leaking, i figured if it was easy i'd do it. i bought some new redline mt-90 a new master and slave cyclinder and a nice ss line to go along with it. As of right now i am just prepping for the long trip and the 2 long track days. thanks, it sounds like i'm good to go then.

I used grease and made a special dowel on the lathe to pack the grease...think I still have the tool not sure...I bought a 24" snap-on extension just to do my transmission.

I'll go check to see if I have the tool and if you want a hand I can bring it up or just mail it to you priority.

took me 11.5 hours to do my trans and master clutch cylinder...it was the first time I did it on this car...plus I replaced hoses...and not one cuss came out my mouth ;)

I don't have the tool but I have my old bearing so I can make another one if you'd like...bearing came right out no problem!

I always use assembly lube on seals when i install them, theres other ways, but you cant go wrong with some assembly lube. Remember to make sure you mark the drive shaft flange positions so to make sure it all goes back the same way. Also, mark the pressure plate and flywheel to make sure you bolt that back the same way also. Make sure that seal is in there 100% flat or it could leak.

hey man whats going on?
while your in there, you get some new flywheel bolts (arp) too. and if you have the time, get your flywheel resurfaced if you havent already.
i finally got my motor back from the machine shop. you should stop by some time next week. i think chris might come by too.
