Tracing wires from the switch is a good idea. I thought maybe it it was some kind of short because it happened after a bulb got fried. Replacing the bulb didnt help. And yes it was the right bulb

your taillight failure sensor maybe bad. its a white or yellow box on the drivers side rear below the piece you pull out to change your light bulbs. you myhave to take that whole rear panel out to get to it. also if i recall correctly. theres a thread on here that shows you how to bypass that sensor.

Do all of your button/dash lights work? If so, then you know the taillight relay and fuse are working properly. Next, see if your license plate lights or side markers are working. If they are, then you are basically left with the light failure sensor as the cause. If the side markers and plate lights are not working, start checking wiring it almost has to be the cause if the bulbs are all known good.

im having about the same problem. all my brake lights work, just not my tail lights. my gauge lights are out. and the fuse to the gauge is good. i have replaced my fuse for the tail lights about 3 times in a row. and everytime i replace the fuse and switch the lights on, the fuse blows again. so until i have time to trace the wires or have the money to replace the relay, im stuck to only driving during the day. it really sucks.

I know that if i dont plug in the tail lamp sensor there will be no taillight but brake light only. So your sensor may be out.

My taillight sensor "went bad" too. But not really.
access it through the drivers side bulb panel. Flex the conntector plug by hand, side to side, up and down, while someone presses the brake pedal, or you block the brake pedal down with something. If the brake lights come on, you may very well have a bad connection in the sensor plug-in socket- I.E. a corroded spade, OR a loose connection. This happened to me., so I took a pair of needle nose pliers, put a slight twist on the bad spade, and the problem is gone. Just something to check and try, before you throw out parts and buy new ones. Let us know what you find out.

Had the same problem with my 91. Bought a new taillight fault sensor box...$129.00...with dealer discount, plugged it in, worked, smelled circuit board, unplugged, $129.00 wasted. Somewhere in a forum, I thought it was Supramania, I found a diagram to wire around the fault sensor. It was very easy. It only took about 5 minutes with a few crimp connectors. No problems since. Search the treads here first. I may have a printed copy at home. If so I'll post it. Good Luck.

Besides the tailight fault sensor box it could also be some oxidation in the light sockets themselves. There might be just enough oxidation to make the lights partially work. This is what happened to me and after a liberal spraying of electrical contact cleaner the problem was fixed.
