I was driving home tonight ( work from 6-11pm ) and a thought occured to me..

I hate the way our stock tach's are positiond......why not rotate it a little to the left ( counter clockwise) so the 0-1000rpm is at the BOTTOM of the tach...like this (Nismo R33 GTR)

aaa.jpg

I have not taken out or fiddled with our gauge clusters....though a buddy of mine has a spare...if you know, can you ROTATE the tach gauge/needle combo to do this mod?

I just thought it might be a different and cool idea....just seems when I am cruising at 70mph at 3000rpm and seeing the tach nearly straight up ( more of a 75 degree angle) it gets kind of annoying....and makes me think I am pushing it to hard ( as assonine and retarded as that sounds).....if I saw the tach needle at 0 degrees or EVEN at the 3000 rpm mark it would make it better mentally...

anyone here follow me?

I thought 'bout somthing like tha.... the new celicas have zero gravity gauges like that, I think they look really good... I wonder if it would be possiable to swap the tach/speedo in

I am actually just going to buy one myself...I just rememberd my buddy used the other one to model the installation of his neon gauge clusters....and broke the needle and all...

So i am just buying one from http://www.mkiiisupragraveyard.com/

I will tell you guys how it goes.

-Jonathan.

Maybe if I can, I could custom mount a STACK RPM meter in the cluster? I know some guys have made FULL custom clusters with carbon backings....but this picture made me think:

your right!
celicagts04_inter.jpg

good memory! I love the color of the gauges too...the dark yellows and amber reds actually are read by our eyes better than the darker green on our clusters...I was on speedhuts website and saw that i could order a black background gauge cluster that says no crap on it ( just like stock) in the stock writing just with RED lighting....that was cool! It was like $90 shipped too! No rice at all...

Thats one thing that I missed on my old 2002 Civic Si...the gauges at night were SOOO easy to read..

isn't the mkivs tack like this? swap in an mkiv tach?

I want a DIRECT OEM fitment....the mk4 is smaller and the wiring might be different...just like on the 86-88 vs. the 88-92...the voltage is somehow different I do believe.....I read that somewhere like on a 1jz swap website....showed the capacitors were actually DIFFERENT but looked the same....weird. had something to do with power savings...heh :icon_conf

No, the 1JZ tach is different, but all the 7M-GTE tachs are interchangable, also, the 7M-GE tach is different than both the 7M-GTE and 1JZ-GTE tach.

About rotating the stock tach, it's not going to be easy to do, the tach is screwed into the cluster, and those screws are the electrical connections.

actually it wouldnt be TOO difficult... you could solder wires onto the circuit board where the screws would normally complete the circuit...then solder the wires to the new screw holes you would create....assuming it would fit in at another angle...it wouldnt be hard electrically...

The way I'd do it, is just drill 3 new holes (pretty sure it's 3), in the white plastic, use loop connectors on the screws for that, and solder them to the circuit board.

It could work, but afterwards your numbers would still be sitting at a funny angle.

I think the easiest way if you really wanted to do it, would be to get a custom gauge face with 0 at the bottom, and place the needle there. That would be the way to get it to look "right", any sort of rotation would make the numbers sit odd, and not match any of the other gauges.

yeah jeff thats basically what i was getting at.... i didnt actually mean solder the wire to the screws ;)

and i agree its gonna look funny lol

Is it really worth it? I would probably get pissed off looking at a cock-eyed gauge cluster. The MKIII guage cluster just wouldn't look "correct" to me. So, I guess, to each his own and good luck with your project.

While on the topic of Tachs, anyone know if there has ever been at one time or another a direct fit aftermarket replacement?

NO. thats the reason I am pursuing this. Blitz made a speed gauge that went to 300kph...that was it.

I have the JDM hyper-rev magazine that shows EVERYTHING and ANYTHING that was made for the 70/80 series supra's.

As for the NEEDLE. that pops on and off correct? And I know they are VERY delicate...me and the brother years ago with our last gen. SE-R Spec V put indiglo gauges in from speedhut....looked factory also but gained like 30 different backlight colors!

Thanks for the tips guys! I will but me a gauge cluster thats broken and just fiddle with it till I KNOW what to do when I take mine out.

Might be a week or two before I get it done. I have all the electronic equipment and soldering stuff at my disposal...my brother :naughty:

Simann, if you want, I have a gauge cluster left over from my 87 (r.i.p.). The bezel piece is missing because a friend of mine needed it for his supra, but the gauges are all there. If you're interested, send me a pm.

cool idea but the numbers are going to be completely cock eyed.

Well If I know from the peripheral view that 3K rpm's is dead level...and I see the needle at dead level..you get me?

Its all about peripheral vision...I have my eye on the road...I still cannot get used to the tach set up...and seeing the need sweep all the way OVER to the other side just gets on my nerves...I like tachs that go up and NOT over.

its just me. :biglaugh:

My cuz in in the art/metal business. he has access to all kinds of stuff. i was going to get him to make me a center consol, all out of polished aluminum, i might still get this done for me. well he is excelent with plastic, i'll ask him if he could recreat the guage with all the numbers correct and facing down, only problem is how is the tach going to point completely down? wouldnt that effect ur RPMs
