The synthetic is fine, keep running it.

Want some advise? Re-torque the head.

EDIT: Just eight days ago you said you bought a car with a blown motor, so this one is rebuilt? Here I thought you had a gem.

It only messes with the rings not seating great so unless you want to put new rings no point if its running fine.

I was thinking it was put together by toyota, and they NEVER have trouble with rings sealing from the get-go. At this point its anyones guess whats going on inside that motor.

What did you pay, and why was he selling?

im about 80 percent sure that its new with 15,000 miles on it. he bought an ebay turbo and the bearings went bad. he decided to just get a 1jz, so he sold it to me for only 800 bucks. i know im taking a leap of faith here by believing all of it, but it was venus motors' buddy so i was more lenient. i just got the engine inside the car and he did say he put an hks metal head gasket and i was already gonna re torque to like 75-80 . so yeah. i paid 800 for the car as well. im about 2,200 - 2,500 into it. also, im still a newbie so advice on many things wont be taken offensively. so ill stay with synthetic then? any other ways to break the rings in well? running hard? soft?

also, it was built from his from from audi. but an engine is an engine right? as long as you got the specs i guess. so far its super clean. everything just looks new and amazing. =)

A race machine shop which I'm not real sure about claims that current honing techniques (at least by them) are so much better at matching the type of piston rings being used that they recommend break-in as follows: Run the engine for 10 min at fast idle (1500-2000 rpm), shut down and walk away until totally cooled. Then repeat and then change oil and filter to synthetic if you wish and done! I always take a ride and run WOT in 3rd gear from 30 mph to 50 mph and coast back to 30 mph to load the rings and do this 10 or 12 times, but these guys claim even that is no longer needed. Not sure I believe them, but I pass it on for what it is worth. I would run a compression check in your case and monitor oil usage. Using more than 1 quart in 1000 miles is a problem IMHO. Best of luck!
