Suspension Help Needed!

I just purchased KYB GR-2's and some Eibach springs for my 86 Supra. Yesterday I installed all of them and it went fine (or so I thought). But when driving it, I noticed a horrible rattle which was the driver's side rear strut. I tried tightening it down and I think the mount ripped or something because now the shaft just spins when I try and tighten the nut. I am going to buy a new mount, but now I have the dilemma of removing the nut so I can install the new mount, help? anyone?

you could try something as simple as putting a socket on the nut and a screw driver wedged underneith it and pry it up as you try to loosen it. :dunno: it should work

I just tried that, and theres not enough room to get a screwdriver underneath. Bah, this stinks.

The kyb shocks do that on the rear in our cars. You need to add an extra washer or two under the top nut that goes through the shock tower. The hole that is in the tower is not completely round and will only let the top piece of the shock rod up through in one direction, if you over torque it initialy, it will strip out the shock tower hole and you will not be able to loosten or tighten it anymore. What you "can" do is put a pair of vice grips or two through the coils and attach them to the shaft(make sure to wrap the vice grip teeth with electrical tape or something similar so that it doesn't scar the shaft) to hold it in place while you loosten the nut off to add a spacer or some washers. GL, it's happend to many people.

(only thing I'd do differently is not use vice grips on the shaft, I'd tilt the Top mount to jam it on the shaft and undo the nut)

Another small hint that may save some $$$ is make sure the bump stops are in good condition I killed a Koni when mine bottomed and split the bump stop

That explains quite a bit. I can't believe I didn't come across that somewhere, bah. So with a new mount and a couple of washers I should be good to go, or so I hope.

I did the same thig two weeks ago. you dont need to add washers,just jack the car up get you 17mm on the strut and get a buddy to hold the shaft of the shock Tighten and you be good to go!:

I am assuming I ran out of threads though. Isn't that why the washers are required?
