The reason for posting this thread is to get feedback from the owners that have done the 1jz or 2jz swap. Im thinking about moving away from the 7m because i hear many positive comments coming from guys that have done this. I want something that will take the horsepower that i want to throw at it one day and if the jz motor is better then why not go that route right?

This is an idea that ive been debating on every since ive had my supra and just curious on what some of you guys think about the swap and if u had any info that could be of any help.
What would you do?

Thanks.

I sometimes wonder if I should have gone 2JZ instead of swapping in a 7M-GTE. Don't you have a built 7M already anyway though? If you're shooting for a certain power level just price it out and see which is the best option.

yes mine is, im looking thru alot of FS theads trying to see what i could get outta mine before i make a move

Yes it will but, to get the 7m the way i want it its gonna be close to the cost of goin jz'd..
ive wanted to go jz'd every since ive had the car just havent because i figured the 7m would be cheaper. But looking back id be rollin in a 2jz with how much ive spent and im still bpu..

I've had 4 7m Supras and 2 1jz ones. I spent $3k on my last 7m car in the engine bay alone, and it was bpu when I was done. Despite nearly everything being rebuilt or replaced, it still had odd problems from time to time that were just annoying.

In contrast, I spent $3k putting a 1jz in my current supra (and that was years ago when it cost more to do). I blew the ECU once, and other than that it has been perfect for the entire time, I've put over 20k miles on it, and I haven't exactly been easy on the engine.

I don't want to start a 7m vs jz fire, but my personal experience has been that the 1jz engine has been much easier to deal with and seems to take whatever I throw at it.

That's exactly the situation I'm in, but now I have a solid 7M to do whatever to but a 2JZ would cost more and take time to swap in while the 7M is ready to go :) Buying a bigger turbo, fuel, tuning, etc parts would be necessary in either case so I'm just keeping the 7M.

This is what im looking for.. i like the points that are made here
Im not trying to start a 7m vs jz battle either just trying to get some feedback.

I've had a bpu 7m car, singled cammed 1j car, and a bpu 2j car. I've also driven a well built 700whp 7m car.

IMO if you have the patients and a prefectionist the 7m is a great engine. But you cant be lazy and cut corners with it or itll bite you in the ass, hard.

IMO the 2j is the best overall engine. Provides a great powerband and strength out of the box. You dont lose any displacement and low end driveability (lack of off boost torque of the 1j). Its also relativily fool proof (but an idiot can still blow it up if you do dumb shit and half ass it). Its also probably the cheapest 600-800hp engine option (without the downfalls of the 1j).

The 1j is a good engine, but lacks the low end balls for the heavy ass mkiii. It will make great power with a proper setup. But compared to the 2j and 7m driving around town sucks, using more throttle and revs then the 7m,2j. Turbos are very lazy with the 1j and doesn't really offer that much of an extended powerband (high rpm flow) over the 2j, or 7m with a bit of work.

Took out the 7m and going for the 1jz off the bat then once money is built up again going to do a bottom 2jz with 1j top. Going to keep and rebuild the 7m as a spare motor or for another car one day. Gonna be a killer motor once it’s done. From everything I’ve read and have been told all these motor options have very great potential just depends on what you do to it and how well it's taken care of :icon_bigg

Yes very well put, have you done the swaps yourself?

Next time you're around let's take a good look at your car then, I've had a problem free 7M ever since my rebuild and it's been run pretty hard the past few months. I'm definitely not against going JZ but you've already got the 7M so why not see if it's feasible to use that?
