You have to compare cars as they become available, but then again, since mine is a 88T, the available cars were the C4 Corvette, the 300ZX turbo and the second gen RX7. (Not sure of when the turbo version was out, but I belive it was around in 88, so that's fine.)

The RX7 was faster IIRC. But it's built like the cheaper car it was/is. (The interior was pretty plastic fantastic back then, and the ones I have seen now have aged very poorly.)
The 300ZX turbo was cool looking, but all the reviews said it was difficult to drive, and way to heavy for the power output of the motor, even with the turbo. I belive that aftermarket has ignored this car even more than the Supra.
C4 version of the vette was a very interesting car. The first digital dashes were and still are hidous. The transmissions were weird. (The standard was an overdrive manual...) I still have to admit I loved the style on the C4, and really like the latest Z06, but do not have 75,000.00 laying around to spend.

So, why the Supra FTW?
Nice seats.
Great interior.
Build quality.
Nice lines.
Independant suspension that is not too harsh, but can be driven quickly with few problems. (Even better now with firmer struts and springs.)
Engine is a gem. I like V8's, but the early EFI engines from were not that powerful.

4 seats in a pinch is nice. (Even if it's just to hold kids or some small stuff.)

1989 turbo 5sp(24700$), white package(40$), 4way power driver's seat(230$), abs(1130$), sportpackage(tems-360$), 4 floor mats(40$) then add 255 for destination, and it should equal 26790$

supras may have gotten beat in comparos by car & driver etc, but that was the 7mgte supra, not top of the line, if they threw the 1jz in the mix :evil2: . but i would say i would pick the supra over em all. as far as cost goes, i still have the original window sticker in my supe, in 91 it was $31,987, thats with leather, targa, and optional cd.

I have the purchase reciept for my Supra in the folder with all the manuals, MOT's, Tax discs and bills - in the UK, in 1988, my 7M-GE Black Supra with the LSD cost exactly £27,950 - which at the time would have been the same as $46,118 using exchange rate average for 1988 :)

On a cost basis, it was competing against BMW 635's and even the Jag XJS's were around that sort of price, hence why comparatively few Supra's ever made it to the UK :(

Eh, tough call, as their development cycles were staggered.
If you say, "What was the Supra's competition from 1986-1993?", we have to include everything up to 1993.
If you say, "What was the Supra's competition in 1986?", ... well nothing.
Not really. The MA70 was devolped in 1985 and production began in Jan of 1986. How long it lasted is not the determining factor. When it was produced is.

edit:
The 300ZX turbo was cool looking, but all the reviews said it was difficult to drive, and way to heavy for the power output of the motor, even with the turbo.
That is what I found too. I have driven them. Acceleration from the seat of the pants meter was about equal to a 7MGE that was still running correctly, ACIS and all.

according to wikipedia, the 1990-1994 mitsubishi eclipse rivaled the supra closely. i dont really think the eclipse had a chance, but wikipedia is always reliable.

i think generations should be compared, not year. for example, mk4 should be compared with the 300zx TT.

sometimes campanies wont keep up with their competitiors b/c they feel it isn't best for profit, so i dont think it is fair to compare yearly. this is my theory, anyway.

i wouldnt really think of the eclipse as a competitor...it seems wierd to me.
