Warning: LONG thread alert, if you want to cut to the chase, just go to the bottom! and check out the pics
I dont believe I've properly introduced myself on here, but I am a young Toyota and basically anything with wheels enthusiast. I have the disease, I am a Toyotaholic. I am an apprentice Commercial Transport Mechanic, but I am thinking of going back to school. If there are any highschool students readying this, my advice is: If you plan on driving a Supra stay in school.
My other Toyota is a 1985 4x4 Pickup, with the 2L-T 2.4L Turbodiesel engine, but thats a whole other addiction altogether.

I bought my supra 2 years ago. Its first 6 months I drove it. 1988 automatic N/A with LSD white exterior and maroon interior. Of course it had the BHG syndrome and the motor was quite smokey. Also had the leaky heater core syndrome(a whole other weekend of work!) I was impressed with this car, although it is a slushbox N/A, I am the kind of guy who likes to take a car apart and rebuild it, so it is a good place to start. The body is in good shape, but not show car shape, which is what I have planned for the future.

It was parked last september and began its first transformation. It simply did not have enough power. I picked up a 1jzgte from a soarer with another slushbox tranny complete for $1200. The process took me 6 months to complete, more than half the time was just waiting for parts(MAP sensor taking the slow boat from Japan.) Added an ebay intercooler and piping, 255LPH fuel pump, 3" exhaust from the TT downpipe(after flex pipe) back. Driven it for the last year and had alot of fun, but its time for the next transformation to take place. It just doesnt have enough power, you know what I mean, I dont need to explain it to you supramaniacs! Also added springs and koni yellow shocks, and snow tires this winter.

My needs for the next transformation: Needs to be my primary driven high performance sports car, that will be at track or autocross maybe 2 times a year, so mainly street and highway driven but fun at the track. Basically I want to be able to keep up with whatever I want, represent supras properly, you know what im saying.... I want at least 400-500HP and torque to match. Also I want this car to maintain a low profile. The only body mods I plan on are the TRD bodykit lookalike, mk4 supra wheels or jdm supra wheels, and new paint. I want to keep it sleeper, and stock looking.
What am I going to need to take it the next level? I see alot of sweet cars on this website! You all have awesome cars and I want mine to be like that too.

The body will be painted and I am considering a body kit, nothing fancy or ricey I just want one like the TRD one. Suggestions for kits and where to get them? If im going to go to the trouble of prepping and painting my entire car, I might as well do the kit now rather than later. For colour I am thinking of keeping it white, but with a twist. I have seen this white colour on audis, cadillacs, and some other cars, its that wicked white with blue translucent I think it is? I will try and find a pic, or maybe take a pic of a car with it, but it looks sweet. Or maybe considering staying true to Toyota, and doing it super white again, midnight blue, the dark green/looks black colour or something like that.. I have done bodywork and paint before and its nothing that new to me, and this car is fairly clean to start with. Also know people who are experts at this sort of stuff, who have the supplies and above all skills to help me pull this off and have it look fantastic.

The next thing to go is the automagic tranny. Will be replaced with an R154 which I am now looking for. Hope to find a car that I can take the rear end, tranny and crossmember. Will make a 1pc driveshaft for this too. My car has 4.3 gears, what will meet my needs better? Is the 4.3 gearset better or should I swap it out for the 5spd rear end? I hate slushboxes! Then I will have to locate a bellhousing(will one for a 2jz work? Driftmotion has the stuff I need on their website I think.) Also will need a flywheel and clutch.

What mods will be needed to my engine? I want a car that pulls hard on the street and highway! 400-500HP minimum, and be upgradable in the future. I have read lots of threads on here, it seems this is possible with a few more mods including: AFPR, SAFC II or neo, 550cc injectors(is that enough?), wideband 02, ebay t4 manifold but what turbo should I use? What other electronics are necessary? EBC necessary? Is a FCD necessary? I can fab and working on cars and trucks is no stranger, I do it all. What other upgrades will be needed? The biggest question is which turbo should I use, and how much boost will it produce. Also is the stock BOV adequate? Do I need to upgrade it? I kind of like the sound it makes now, goes along with the sleeper theme(stock TT BOV.) Is it possible for someone who is mechanically inclined to tune a car with an AFC and wideband? How much does this cost if it can only be done by professionals? It is new to be, but there isnt much else I dont get into. Where can I source a turbo from? I dont want a crappy unreliable turbo, needs to be daily driven, thinking some sort of garret turbo.

BOTTOM LINE: I want a nice daily driven capable 5spd supra, capable of 400-500hp. Goes to the track or autocross maybe 2 times a year, want to do 12 seconds or better. Needs to be upgradable in the futre, its never enough. What do I need to take it there.

you need to search every single part and aspect of the car you want.

your post is a huge dream list that takes time and $$$$$$$$ to get there. Nothing you plan on doing is ground breaking (interesting huh :)) and has been done before. Good luck, its looking to be a long road a head!

as you can see ive been here since may 2007, and I have been reading and reading since then. I figured since Ive been lurking for so long I would make my own build thread. Is this one of these forums that gives people a hard time for asking questions? maybe I will go somewhere else. I am not a stranger to car forums and always help people the best I can even if its been asked before because every car and every owner is different.

You will see the "Search" word thrown around a bit by some of those who feel they have seen a question 100 or more times too many, but you won't find a better car forum. A build thread is a great way to get the answers you want. For me I found that I could throw out my ideas, and either get approval, or good reasons why I should do it another way. You also get a chance to show off the things you are proud of, without starting a new thread every time you do something. I found my build thread to be very rewarding, while being entertaining at times to those reading.

I wasnt trying to trick anyone, here are the pics. Theyre all stored on my old computer, and I made this thread on the laptop.
I had alot of help with my swap from this website, it is the best website.
Reaper; no hard feelings, I want this thread to stay on topic and not turn into a flame fest!

heres some more.. engine bay is dirty and some ugly looking wiring going on there, just drove it to calgary in winter, and when I got here the starter decided to go 'click click click' so I did the relay mod, but it was -30 out so thats why it looks like it was done in a hurry: I WAS COLD!
also need to do something about the speedometer on the column, I dont like how it looks but at the time didnt want to destroy my cluster trying to make it fit.
I dont know any other supra owners so its hard to get ideas, this is the only place I can go! Most people I know are honda, DSM, or nissan guys, so I gotta show them how its done TOYOTA style. Also put up a pic of my green truck, the other toyota. Also only people who are jealous of supras make fun of them and call them big ugly and slow!

oops, for some reason the pic of my truck uploaded weird.. can I delete pics after theyre uploaded? it works this time.. the truck is a 1985 with 2L-t 2.4L turbodiesel. Its my first toyota. Has 454,xxxkm and still pulling strong! this winters project was to rebuild the engine so I picked up a parts motor last fall and spent the last month or so rebuilding the engine, turbo, and sent out the injectors. Its locked front and rear and ready to go anywhere I point it. 2.5" exhaust, pyro and boost gauge too, boosting 15psi! gets about 24US MPG.

mods feel free to move this to the build section, since this is kind of a build/ help me plan my next move thread I wasnt sure where it belonged..
Today I went to the local picknpull and found a donor car!! shes missing the driveshaft and shifter, but has an R154, going to pull it tomorrow. the car is a 1988 ma70 turbo 5spd, so this tranny should work with my 1jz if I get the correct bellhousing and flywheel right? will the input shaft be the right one? it also has the slave and clutch with it, are the clutches the same? I already have a peddal and slave cylinder and pipe. Does not look like fun to pull, but a couple feet of extensions will hopefully make it not too bad.

shame its missing the driveshaft and shifter, I think the output from the trans is different than my a340 tranny. I used the original ma70 driveshaft for my swap. where the heck am i going to find a shifter and output spline!! Can I simply find the output spline and seperate the ujoint, then change the splines? or are the driveshafts different lengths? shorter or longer? I can have it lengthened or shortened if I cant find a driveshaft. will a shifter from a 4runner or pickup with R154 work? I am guessing NO unless I can find a 2wd but I thought I would throw that out there. one more thing to add is I have an electronic speedometer, is there a speed sensor on the tranny for my speedo? I hope there is, the donor car has ABS too if that helps. seems like there should be a speed sensor for the abs or cruise, is this the case?

Whats your budget?

dont really have one at this time. I wont cheap out on the important things such as the tranny turbo and paint. Its going to be done in stages so I dont have to pay for it all at once.
1. tranny, i hate slushboxes.
2. paint
3. single turbo and supporting upgrades to take it to 400-500whp.
I am good at finding parts, I can wait even if it takes a year to collect everything I need. I silently wait until I find a good deal and grab it! I can fab too and have connections to paint and body guys.
I dont see this being finished anytime soon. I like the idea of a rolling project, do some work in the winter(6 months) then drive it in the summer for 6 months. repeat as necessary.

search is good! Its just this website has so much information on it, that sometimes I dont have time to look through 20 pages, but I have made an effort.
So tomorrow Im going to pull the R154 tranny. I wont find another one soon for the price.
I have: clutch peddal

Will need to find an R154 driveshaft. Also will pull the 3rd member, for the gearing. Then I need a 1jz bellhousing(driftmotion!) and a 1jz flywheel(ebay?) and clutch.
What is a good clutch for me? I dont want my clutch holding me back in the future when I upgrade the power. I think 7m and 1jz clutches are the same, but the flywheel is different correct?
This website is awesome I really do appreciate the help I've gotten here so far, and the help I'm going to get in the future. Without the contributions of members on here I wouldnt have got my 1jz swap running with such ease. This kind of website is great because I know this thread wont just help me, it will help other people spend their money wisely too!

here it is, all in all its greatness, R154! FTW!
I sincerely feel sorry for the guys who tried to pull the tranny but couldnt get the job done, they made alot less work for me at the scrap yard today. Sorry boys I hope its nobody on here, if it is I'll buy you a drink. Also to my surprise I found a brand new AISIN clutch disc in there, and the 7mgte flywheel looks brand new also, but I dont need a 7mgte flywheel.
Just a few simple questions regarding the R154
1. Is the slave cylinder the same for a 7mgte and 1jz bellhousing? Also the little rod between the slave and fork is missing, so I will probably just buy a new one to get the little rod. The fork is the same for the R154 right? All I need to do is switch the bellhousing, correct all the rest of the MA70 GTE parts are the same?
2. How much power can a stock pressure plate and disc hold up to?
3. I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but will the 2 support brackets(bellhousing to block) work with a 1jz bellhousing and 1jz block? I didnt grab them, but if they will work I will go get them.
4. My car has 4.30LSD and the parts car has 3.90LSD. Should I go back and get the diff? I guess I will just have to try it and see how I like it with the 4.3 gears, I dont ever go faster than 180km/h I am too scared! Seems like the 4.3 will be a good choice for my BPU 1jzgte in the mean time.
5. As you can see the shifter is missing. I read that a w58 or R154 shifter will work, obviously from a mk3. Will a mk2 shifter or mk4 shifter work? I see both on ebay now, but no Mk3 shifter.

Now I just need a flywheel, shifter, bellhousing and front driveshaft.. This project is taking shape quicker than I thought it would. So far only set me back $120 for the tranny at picknpull.
