Speeds it all up, and smooths out server operations. How much ram are we running/wanting to upgrade to?

I hear ya doward. I've built pc's but...know nothing about servers. Just wondering if it was basically the same as pc ram (but a lot faster/bigger?)
The server is actually starting to get old. It's an IBM eServer xSeries 440 with two 2.4 GHz Xeon processors. It will take 32 GB of ram. It was a monster when it was new. I think I paid about $8000 for it and the RAID enclosure. Now I'm sure you can find them on ebay for about a grand.
We've got 1.5 GB at the moment (I just added a GB of it.)
Unfortunately, it's not the same stuff you'd use in a workstation.
It takes CAS3, Registered, ECC Dimms.
$364.99 per GB + shipping from CDW was the best I've found on it. That's where our most recent stick came from.
I'll order another one when I've got some extra cash to get us up to 2.5 GB.
What I really need to do is to split the database and webserver on to two separate boxes. But that's damned expensive and it will have to wait a while. We'll get there eventually.
