Supra wont start - need help/advice

alright, i bought my supra a few months ago, and it started and ran great. Then, a few weeks ago, i went into my car to start it..... i turned the key, all lights on panel = normal, but when i turn to the start position, nothing, all i hear is a click from the antilock brake system area (the right side of the car).....

summary:
if i start the car via the ignition key, the car doesnt start, just hear a click noise.

if i bypass the starter by turning on the ignition switch and attaching a wire from the starter to the positive battery terminal, it starts


anyone have any advice or help?????

I had a problem like this before too. My issue was the battery was going bad, and it didn't have enough amps to crank the starter, but it would show 12 volts and power the panel and lights. Could have a bad starter selonoid too.

I think you've answered your own question! The starter solenoid is fried!

The solenoid cant be bad if you are feeding 12 Volts to it off the battery and it starts the car!!

Before you throw any parts at it, make sure your alarm isnt killing your starter. Close all the doors, lock it, and unlock it with the key, to disarm the alarm.

I have heard of people replacing part after part when it was just the toyota theft prevention system doing its job.

yea i heard about the alarm killing the car thing, but never really tried to do anything about it, i mean, when i bought the car, the previous owner didnt even have the control and stuff...... ill try locking, unlocking, etc

Supras dont have a key fob remote if thats what you mean. The factory alarm is just manually set with the key.

Also, that wiring digram is helpfull if checking for a voltage drop, but its a bit misleading because there is so much more to the circuit than that. There is starter relay and a theft deterrent computer not shown there.
