Hey guys, about 2 weeks ago my supra stopped idling for me while I was driving her. Checked the codes when I got home and I got a 31(AFM) Replaced the AFM and now I don't get any codes but shes still not idling properly. Meaning not idling at all. Still the same symptoms. Starts fine idles for about 1 second and dies. Sometimes she'll almost die then idle back up to 800rpms for another second then die again. I'm stumped. Only thing I could think of is some type of electrical problem. My battery is kinda old and so is my alternator. Can anyone else think of what this might be?

Start by checking your ISC valve, the TSRM has a page on that. If that is not the problem, check your fuel system and make sure the injectors are getting gas.

I was talking to my dad and he said it could be the fuel pump. Anyone have any thoughts about that? How would I test the pump?

Hey I am having an identical problem right now. Identical. Got code 31. Replaced afm 3 times as well as the ecu, spark plugs and plug wires. The I checked all the wiring and grounding points. Then I check and replaced the ISCV. My walbro fuel pump is brand new as are my 550 cc injectors. Whatever our problem is, I am almost positive it is the same. I am currently at a loss as to what else to do. I will, however, take you up on the timing screw possibility. I am desperate enough to try anything now.

PS. I have an safc1 and avc-r and they both get readings from the afm. As well, I ran the car without the afm and it is the same at idle. However, under gas it acts completely differently.

Hope my experiences help you out. If you figure out what it is then please let me know asap. I've been carless for 2 months now.

Has anyone of you guys figure out what is wrong with your cars yet. I seem to have the same problem right now and still haven't figured it out and i tried everything so far and fail on almost everything.

did any of you check your spark plugs and see what they look like?

I could put new ones in and after the car dies for about a minute of running the plugs are as black as night.

timing screw? is that the idle screw by the TB?

I'll answer this since no one else did...

Yes. Use a flat head screw driver to turn it either clockwise or counter clock-wise to increase or decrease your idle RPMs... I just did this yesterday on my 87. I believe the later Supras (89 to 92) don't have this option but I could be wrong.

back to the basics guys. Check for vacuum leaks. My car was having a similar problem. Wouldnt die but stumbled alot. Wouldnt idle well at all. Was a cracked vacuum hose. The one connecting the turbo accordian hose and through the metal pipe atached to the 3000 pipe going to the other side of the motor. IM not sure what those hoses are like new, but the ones I have on my car are hard as brick and would crack easily in this condition

I'm good on vac too. When I try to hold the car at say 3k rpms it will rev that high but will not hold that rpm. I have to feather the throttle to keep the car running. Will rev all the way to redline with not stuttering and spits flames so Im guessing she got enough fuel. My plugs and wires are also pretty new (6 months, 6k miles). #1 plug is straight up black. Also I am getting no engine codes.
