Supra Solenoid Dead?

I'm about to go look at a supra that is supposedly in perfect condition except the stater solenoid doesn't work. I want to test this out and also if possible start it up.

If I took a 12v connection straight from the battery and ran in across the starter solenoid would the car start? as long as the key is is position 2? or is it smarter than that? (looks like the starter has its own connection, and ground must be from where it is bolted, but correct me if I'm wrong)

If that doesn't work and you see a red supra getting pushed down a hill then don't worry... i'll just be trying to start it ;)

i'll also get under there with a multimeter while the owner holds it in position 3... if it's not getting 12v i'll keep my mouth shut, and hope its a relay or clutch switch, or something simple, because the only reason it's going so cheap is he can't do mechanical work :)

That will work, provided the starter is any good. Starter circuit problems are common on these cars, and there is a lot of threads about it. Be warned that the problem may be in the wiring harness. There is a relay to help that problem though.

Electronics are my specialty... I have pretty much all the tools/knowledge to do anything in that area...

learning mechanical work as I go ;)
