First of all people like to argue that short throw is different then short shift
The fact is they are pretty much the same the only difference is if you do strictly short shift (SOGI) mod then the shifter is lower and closer to the transmission.

If you do strictly short throw 90% aftermarket shifters then the shifter is more or less OEM hight but less travel & more force to notch into gear and travel all the same as short shift with the exception of the shifter knob height.

There is also mixed shifters that haves both short throw and shift, but the hight is between OEM and short shift because if you do to much throw and shift at the same time your having the overall shifter length the same length as the lowest safe short shift stick the leverage is unsafe you will miss shift more then likely it will also be to notchy and sloppy to hit gears percisionly.

Here is an illustration that shows the physics

Knowing this and being how cheap and crafty I am I decided to go with a low profile shifter that looks good in the car doesnt stick up like an old pick up and is free

The SOGI mod is one of the best solutions that fits everyones budget but I did a slightly modified version of it because it uses a general aftermarket shifter with set screws that come apart when on the track or vibrate loose I decided to keep threaded like factory so I could use the factory knob.

You perform the normal SOGI mod except you trim down the shaft and top threaded piece and weld them back together the desired hight so you could use an OEM threaded knob I found in my case was about an overall length of 8.5" it sets the shifter about 2-3" above the console so you dont mash fingers and gets good shifts.

You can also machine down the O.D. of the shaft then tap/die thread your shaft to 12mm x1.25 pitch I found welding it togethr was cheaper easier faster in my case.

Either way when doing and SOGI mod it is better to install new bushings and the heaviest shifter you could find here is my setup.

Here is the SOGI write up. http://www.supras.com/06/techcenter/display.php?QID=30

I have the mod..I haven't noticed a noise then again a 4in exhaust to a glass pack muffler could very well cover that up :)
Same here, I never even noticed in mine. I also have a 4" exhaust but my exhaust is near silent when the windows are up, and the only way I can even hear the buzz is with the radio all the way off and actually listening for it.

Im pretty sure the SOGI mod looks great. Im just a little concern on the shift feel. How is it? Im pretty tempted to do this mod.

This was the first mod I did to my Supra 10 years ago when I got it. I have to say I still love it!! I do not get the harmonics some complain of and I had this on my car from stock to were it is now. I have mine threaded as I was always having my set screws loosen off and buzz.

For the cost of this mod is can not be beaten.

I have driven cars with C's and a few others, there much worse.

i love the feel of the stock shifting it feels so smooth even with a r154.

unless you race why bother with shorter shifting. just drive casually. unless it affects time just get a bigger turbo with mods.

Might want to tell people they may end up with a harmonic buzz through the shifter at highway cruise speeds.

I also have the "buzz" and it is annoying as shit, some day I will be a high roller and pick my self up a C's :icon_bigg

I can also hear the synchros engaging when going into gear...but it is nowhere near loud enough to bother me.

simple physics.

lower the leverage arm but not increase the fulcrum equal you having to exhert more force to shift gear.

All the real short shifters like C's, SS etc change the fulcrum point to allow for a shorter leverage arm.

It really is a simple lever system.

I believe that if you have excessive buzz... ♫..♫.♫ coming from the shifter it is mostly due to the fact the general fit shift knob is only anchored in the middle by two - three metal set screws so when the stick vibrates the two pieces rattling together causes the majority of the noise.

To remedy this either use the OEM threaded shift knob on a threaded stick or if you must use your general fitting knob wrap the metal shaft with heat shrink to make the fit more snug drill small holes in the shaft for the set screws to bite in better or fill the general knob with silicone then set it on the shifter end set the set screws allow to dry then use.

I agree with you 100% the sogi haves = force & = shift travel distance as after market shifters because any time you change the stick length but keep the same pivot ratio of the two the same then they are the same and all that changes is the shifter knob hight.
