So as some of you already know i've hardwired and modded a supermonitor to fit my car. I had a couple of questions :)

1. The engine oil function. What starts this counting down/measuring? Do i have to push a button to start it?

2. My economy reads completely messed up, instead of being a bit out it actually tries to tell me i get like 3mpg LOL.
Is this suggesting my 02 is not happy?

Whos got a Supermonitor for Dummies book? Haha

Suze, I had one on my 88T but I completely forgot how it worked.... and I have one coming this week so maybe I'll be able to help then!

Yes, factory option for 86.5-88 AFAIK. It's pretty bad ass :).

I hear alot about this Supermonitor device. What exactly is it and was it a factory option for our cars?

it is essentially a highly advanced trip computer (for the age of our cars) it was a factory option, and i believe that it was offered in 87 and 88 if im not mistaken.

I believe it has a few different options... Code checker, MPG, and a few others, thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Seems pretty cool, better than our stock clock!

The supermonitor shows information like economy, distance of fuel left, diagnostics without getting off ya bum, Engine oil countdown, timer and stuff :)

Thanks Matt :D
My engine oil couter just doesn't move so i'm not sure what i'm missing.

I also had another curious question, how on earth does it know how much mileage is left in the fuel? It doesn't connect to the fuel sender so how does it know how much fuel is left lol

I installed one in the process of my rebuild. 87 7MGTE. Everything you need to install it is right there under the dash. Large white plug for computer, and of course it easily installs into the stock clock area on Inst Panel.

It mounts to the drivers side or left of the brake pedal, just view it from different angles and you will see the 2 mounting studs it mounts on under dash.

No, I havn't tried mine as I am yet to install engine/tranny, but will be doing that this weekend ^^

Your oil life function starts counting down after you reset it and start driving.
There are no sensors reading oil quality, in case anybody was wondering.

Your fuel economy will only be accurate if you are unmodified and have the stock injectors for you engine. I believe it calculates off of fuel flow through the injectors. I'm not sure so hopefully a more knowledgeable person will reply.

Your RANGE is a fixed number. Everytime I reset mine it gives me 320 miles and it's actually pretty close. You can reset it with a quarter tank of fuel and it will still tell you you have 320 miles left so it doesn't calculate off your average economy and number of gallons left in the tank like new vehicle will.

What I want to know is since the calendar stopped in 2006, what year between 86 and 06 follows the same calendar as now?

Not all pre 89's are pre wired for it. My 86.5 na was not and my 87 Turbo parts car was. I had to swap the entire body harness from behind the dash so I could have it, and it was a bitch. I think most turbos and some na's were prewired but it's easy to find the plug. It's great to be able to read your codes off of it without leaving the comfort of your drivers seat. :) Here's a pic

I hope mine has the harness ( I haven't checked )... because mine should be here tomorrow.

What does the harness look like? Just the same one behind the dash w/ an extra plug or what?

The harness is the white plug in the pic, above the pedals. I don't have one installed, but luckily my car came with the harness for when I decide to put one in.

So here's a list of years you can use for the next 5 years

This year 2008 - Use 2003
2009 - Use 2004
2010 - Use 2005
2011 - Use 2006
2012 - Our next leap year - No year matches, so you'll have to just survive the first 2 months then set your calendar to 2001

Have fun :)

Excellent, thanks!

BTW, try resetting your economy (mpg) while just cruising down the road. It should read out higher than 3 mpg.

The mpg reading will be all over the place for the first few miles after a reset, then it settles down. Best way to check calibration is to fillup and reset the consumption number, drive until close to empty and fillup again at the exact same pump. The number of gallons to refill used should match the amount on the SM display. Since there is no decimal point, it is accurate to only +/- a half gallon, but it should nail that perfectly. If not, you have something wrong.

Not available after 88, but it is possible to wire it in. I made a set of wiring diagrams to do it for my 90. Its a lot of work. PM me if you want a copy.

Hey Suprra Girl. I undertook the job of the year and hardwired a harness into an 86.5 n/a for a Supermonitor...a lot of work but worth it because it works! :) Anyhow, I don't understand your "list of years". If I put "03", it still displays the year as "03", not "08", so am I missing something?

It will still display the specified year i.e 03 but the dating with correct days will be right. Unless someone can rechip the dating in them we will never be able to fix it.

Reason for specifying the years above is so that say the 9th is a saturday this year. If you have the wrong year it will instead be 9th on a wednesday. It's just pedantism haha
